Israeli police order block of gambling sites

18 August 2010
By Dan Igo

Israeli police have ordered Internet service providers (ISPs) to block access to overseas online gambling Web sites, according to Haaretz.com.

ISPs in Israel were provided a list by police of sites and IP addresses to block. It is the first time in Israel that ISPs have been instructed by police to block sites, according to Haaretz. ISPs have 48 hours to respond to the order.

Well-known online casinos, including Victor Chandler, are on the list of banned sites.

The police order says the blocked sites "provide a place for illegal gaming for lotteries or gambling, as defined in Section 224 of the Penal Code." Gambling is illegal in Israel, according to police.

ISPs say the Israeli police have no legal authority to issue such a ban, according to the article.
