I was using shared hosting and then was discouraged on the down time and the potentially slow resource allocation you can get with a shared hosting.
I purchased a semi-dedicated server package from webhosting.uk.com for about $100 per month. Unlimited domains, and lot's of resources. There's only 6 accounts per server, and each one is garaunteed a minimum capacity, that exceeds my foreseen needs for at least a year or more.
Further more it's hosted in the UK, where my target audience is. if I was facing US I'd go with the cheaper US companies.
Domain, IPs. That's a good question. I know that there's an advantage of having different class C IPs from different links. My hosting package only comes with two IPS. i guess I could purchase more, but I've found that it's cheaper to get cheaper shared hosting account for the minor sites that feed link juice to your main sites.
Good luck, and please tell us how it's going for you.
