Using Google Insights to find break out terms and then building a landing page works very well.

For instance; Posh Bingo when they initially started TV ads. We funnelled link juice down from a front page to a 3rd level landing page and started ranking very well (top 3)

I also monitor domain changes for domains that include keywords through domaintools to identify new bingo site that are obviously going to launch because all TLD's and even ccTLD's are purchased in one go.

You can use this technique for any term.

I actually prefer using Google Adwords Tool mostly since I'm targetting traffics from this SE. It also help me a lot about which keywords I should optimize in my site mostly to land a good SERP at the same time a good percentage of traffic share.

With all of that great list, one that is mostly used, considering me is the Google Adwords and apparently, it is the most reliable one.

Also don't forget the "related searches" on Google and Yahoo. They can provide some interesting keywords to explore on.

Google Analytics is very useful because it shows, also like Statscounter, how a certain keyword was used to access the individual pages of a site.
