Another question - PayPal Fees - U.S. Verification, etc.

    Hi again everyone,

Another question I wanted to throw out there to anyone who has had experience with it.

When advertisers pay via PayPal, I see that sometimes PayPal takes a fee and sometimes they don't. From what I understand, it has to do with whether the person (not me, the advertiser) is U.S. verified (no fee) or not (fee).

Problem is when I quote an advertising rate, I have no idea if a fee will be assessed or not, as the advertiser doesn't identify where they're from.

According to industry standard, who is supposed to cover the costs of fees? I.E., If I charge $50 for something, I wanna be sure I get a full $50 and not $47.50 or something like that. The problem only compounds if they can only pay in euros or pounds, as PayPal will convert the money for you, but at a low exchange rate...

What's the best/common practice? Obviously, with larger amounts and size of the fee only increases, and it'll start to add up over time...

Your answers/help is very much appreciated!

    Thanks,

    Robbie

    NO,

It has to do with how the money is sent having nothing to do with where the person lives, verified or not.

If the payment is for an invoice, eBay items or anything commercial then the payment goes through and PayPal collect their fees.

If the payment is done as "personal" (such as between friends) then there is no fee.

If you want to insure you get the full $50, then you will have to charge the customer more....but then you are no longer charging $50 but you will be "charging" $52.50 (or whatever you decide on).

Keep in mind, in the scenario above, if the advertiser is paying the fee, they are less concerned about what fees are collected as what the bottom line is to them.

Okay - thanks for the clarification.

Would it be legitimate then, if there's no invoice required on the part of the advertiser, that I request he/she send money and mark "personal"? I could even say (this would save on fees). It shouldn't matter to them, right?

    Not really,

You obviously have to make the decision on your own, but I would NEVER risk losing my PayPal account over the fee.

I would never send someone a "personal" payment for a commercial purchase. Plus I always need an invoice.

It's better to assume you will be charged fees and build it into your price.
