Directory submission is a good method to get backlinks but you have to find article website that provides information related to you niche.

Forum posting is also a good way to get backlinks and traffic for your website/blog & in my opinion this is easier method than directory submission.

The best way to create backlinks are from relevant sites with high da/pa and trust flow.
I would avoid the directories.

Don't do more than few links from directories. Get them from paid dirs which are better than free directories

In most cases directory links are really poor links since (overall with exceptions) the directories themselves would be considered poor quality sites.

On one hand forum signature links can help, but the forum signature links only have value if on topic.

Having forum signature links from a gambling or gambling related forum is helpful to a small degree for gambling related websites, but the use of forum signature links pointing at travel related websites is poor due to being completely off-topic, and having very little value for the visitor.

The key component to any link and it's value, is the value it provides the visitor.

best way to get STRONG backlinks is to create your own network of sites, it's called PBN (Private Blog Network) that is the most effective way of doing it and getting high rankings for practically anything (all depends on your budget really).

That is the secret sauce really..... the only thing is knowing exactly how to do it without getting penalized by the big G.

Rick, you can't say all guest blogging is spammy. Yes, when guest blogging became popular there were tons of people providing short articles and spin articles to lazy bloggers as well as many people joining blog networks in order to build a large backlink profile. That is spammy, however, guest blogging done right by providing value to someone else's website readers is not spammy.

If I were to write an article for someone else's blog. I would make sure to provide value with something like an 800-1,500 word article with 1-3 links. Given I keep it to 1 link per 500 words and make sure those links provide value to the article. As far as blog networks, the public blog networks everyone should stay away from. Building a private blog network by yourself or with 2-4 friends is another story. Everyone in the private network should know how it works and what to do. However, I wouldn't build a private blog network with just anyone. There are rules in place to make sure all backlinks are clean and the network doesn't enter googles radar.

But we all know that "most" folks that will do quest posting will NOT do so in a safe manner and will just blindly make low quality posts with links just anywhere, or even some what quality posts on low quality sites.

If google wasn't against it, why would the head of their webspam team state they were against it 2 and a half years ago?

Because google knows most webmasters will self-police whenever they say anything. Google's SEO department is a joke.
