Simple Rookie SEO Mistakes

Especially in the gambling space with such niches as bingo and poker is where I have been seeing mostly these simple SEO mistakes, the reason due to the fact that when most people wish to try and make money online, affiliate sites come to mind, especially in the gambling niche. This usually means that people try and SEO their own site without any previous or little knowledge of what search engine optimisation is. This means that people are constantly picking up bad habits from online articles and forums that are not giving them the best advice.

Footer Links to Google

It sometimes makes me laugh when I see people link to Google and other search engines in the footer of their site because they have read that linking to an authority site is good for rankings. Some SEOs believe that having out-bound links can help your SEO strategy, but linking to Google will probably give you no benefit at all and it is going to lose you page rank more than anything. If you had a bingo site and you linked to Google then this is unrelated, you would probably get more benefit by linking to your competitor because at least the link would be related, therefore look more natural.

Directory Links

Directory links DO work, but having all directory links for your incoming links is not good. Naturally your site would get links for directory sites over times as your brand gets bigger, but getting 1000s of directory links in a week, is not only unnatural but it can make your site look spammy. Getting a few directory links every now and then is defiantly the way to go.

Linking the Home Link

On most websites when you wish to return to the main page of the site you look for a button or link that says “home” as this is standard. Some people however will use their keywords such as “online poker” or “online bingo” as these counts towards more links pointing to them with their keywords. I do believe that this can give you some sort of a boost but not only does it annoy users but it looks kind of spammy when the search bots come by to visit.

Repeating Keywords

Some people repeat their keywords over and over again in their content, “best online…”, “best online…”, “best online…” Once you have mentioned your keywords 2 or 3 times then the search engines know that your site is about this term, mentioning the term 10 more times is not going to give you more of a boost. Infact, I have personally clicked the back button on sites because the repeating of keywords in my mind was just too much for me.

Paid Links

Some people are unaware that buying paid links is against Google’s TOS and can get your site banned, to learn more visit: Google and paid links.
