CNBC to air report on illegal gambling

The American business cable news network CNBC is set to air a report on Wednesday, December 16th entitled "CNBC Investigates: The Big Business of Illegal Gambling."

The show will touch upon aspects of illegal gambling in the U.S., including sports bookmaking and high-stakes poker.

Of course, the report will discuss online gambling:

CNBC also looks at how illegal gambling is moving out of the basement and onto the Internet where it's more difficult for law enforcement to stop. Technology has made illegal gambling much more accessible and the same computer used for work or to connect with family and friends can also be used to wager outside the law. CNBC speaks with Jay Cohen, an Internet entrepreneur who starts a 200 million dollar offshore gambling website and becomes the first American prosecuted for running an online bookmaking operation.

The program concludes with the debate over legalizing gambling. It's an argument that is gaining traction in Washington and CNBC speaks with congressmen from both sides of the argument-Congressman Jim McDermott, a Democrat from Washington State and the sponsor of a bill that would regulate and tax online card games and Congressman Bob Goodlatte, a Republican from Virginia and author of "The Unlawful Internet Gambling Enforcement Act."

Here's a link to the Web site about the show.

The GPWA's own Michael Corfman helped the creators of the show get some background information on online gambling...

I watched the show last night and here are some brief comments:

Overall, it was an OK show. The pluses were the statement that 99 % of all sports/casino/poker gambling is illegal, and this makes it ripe for the legalization argument, particularly in times of massive govt debt run-up (although legalization may have a negative effect on affiliates - separate discussion). The minuses were that AP and UB got ripped up pretty bad over their cheating scandals (much worse than the 60 Minutes expose a year or so ago). Also, that idiot Goodlatte (one of the authors of the UIGEA) was given some big airtime talking about how online gambling was immoral and socially irresponsible, and how UIGEA has helped thwart it. What CNBC didn't mention, and shame on them, was that Goodlatte received over 100K from the Horse Racing lobby, to carve them an exception in the UIGEA....that 2-faced idiot ought to be hung by his short hairs for engineering that one.

Watched it as well and you've hit on all the highs and lows. I was glad to see though that "all the more reason for regulation" was mentioned a number of times.

I recorded it and will watch it tonight. Sounds like it followed the layout of the web story. I can't wait to hear Goodlatte talk his talk

Yes I was able to watch this as well, it was nice to see some of the people being interviewed saying that online gambling just needs to be legalized and regulated. With a show like that you never know what side they are going to take, I thought the show played both sides very well.

Found a lot of truth in what they were saying and they made a lot of valid points. However, an hour was not sufficient for a program and business of such a large nature.
