It is a problem for sure. Our oceans are being depleted at a significant rate and forests are being chopped down to make space to grow crops and raise cattle.
The biggest problem with becoming wealthy is that people expect a different type of diet which is more luxury (meat) based. Meat based diets consume 10 times more resources, land, and water.
Here are some interesting facts:
'Professor David Pimentel of Cornell University's Ecology Department has calculated that it takes 500 litres of water to produce 1kg of potatoes, 900 litres per kg of wheat, 3,500 litres per kg of digestible chicken flesh and a massive 100,000 litres for 1kg of beef.'
'a single dairy cow produces approximately 120 pounds of wet manure per day. Estimates equate the waste produced per day by one dairy cow to that of 20-40 humans per day.'
'Expansion of livestock production is a key factor in deforestation, especially in Latin America where the greatest amount of deforestation is occurring – 70 percent of previous forested land in the Amazon is occupied by pastures, and feedcrops cover a large part of the remainder.'
I could have found a lot more facts, but it's obviously a clear problem. Ethanol for cars is also increasing the extent of the problem.
