dedicated server? package deal for multiple hosting
Hi all,
First thank you for coming in and trying to help.
What's my best route for getting a package deal to have multiple domains hosted on it?
I probably got about 30 sites and seek to increase.
I think I know where I want to purchase since I've worked with them a long time.
What I don't know is all the correct terms and what to avoid.
if you got a min ... can you list me my best choice for a hosting package that i can put all my domains on it and then room to increase ... that isn't going to work against me in the search engines ... such as I've read you want your own IP address for each domain. (that sound right?) ... and ifso then of course I'd want that kind of hosting package and not one that gave me same IP for each domain I host.
I don't really know what to add? But I bet when you folks are thru there will be plenty I forgot to think about.
thanks again
S.
Oh ya, and its got to be easy enough for a dummy to figure out.

I have a VPS account at HostMySite...They offer dedicated as well. As far as I know, no limit on number of domains. So far, I have been very pleasantly surprised by their tech support - everyone I've spoken to has known what they are doing and fixed things up for me within an hour or so! I am actually getting 99.9+% uptime and the response is about 10X faster than my shared hosting account.
I have the .net VPS + account... Less than $150/mo and includes lots of system resources and add-ons (like SQL Server). They have linux and coldfusion plans too.

I was using shared hosting and then was discouraged on the down time and the potentially slow resource allocation you can get with a shared hosting.
I purchased a semi-dedicated server package from webhosting.uk.com for about $100 per month. Unlimited domains, and lot's of resources. There's only 6 accounts per server, and each one is garaunteed a minimum capacity, that exceeds my foreseen needs for at least a year or more.
Further more it's hosted in the UK, where my target audience is. if I was facing US I'd go with the cheaper US companies.
Domain, IPs. That's a good question. I know that there's an advantage of having different class C IPs from different links. My hosting package only comes with two IPS. i guess I could purchase more, but I've found that it's cheaper to get cheaper shared hosting account for the minor sites that feed link juice to your main sites.
Good luck, and please tell us how it's going for you.

Ok,
If you really want different IP's, you have to decide how far you will go with that.
If you want to go to the extreme, and go with different class c's, or say maybe different class c's for each set of say 10 domains, then you will have to be on 3 different servers (counting 30 domains).
Although it is somewhat possible to have more than one class c on a server, it's not very practical. (they must be on different network cards, and due to routing issues will normally be on different switches, or at least different vlan's on the same switch.
For ease of use, you could either learn how to manage a windows server, or make sure your server had cpanel on it.
Also Steve, (I know you, and following your criteria you asked for - keeping it simple for you) taking on a bit more of the management slice can be a frustrating task so be sure you go with a host that you can TALK to. Support that answers the questions you ask, not answers that have nothing to do with what you are asking...
Email support is certainly needed, but I personally like talking to tech's on the phone in some situations so if you want that, be sure that phone support is offered.
If you don't do SQL and don't think you will within the year, don't let anyone upsell that to you, but it doesn't hurt to have MySql support and should not cost additional and if so the charge should be next to nothing.
Also, look at your sites, are some done with php, asp or cfm extensions? If so then you will need to make sure that is supported.
What about email? Is email gonna be on the same server, or will you be accessing a different email server? If this is a dedicated server and email is not provided on a different server, is the mail server license and software included or must you purchase separately?
What about dns? Is dns on the same server? How will you access dns? Is it controlled by cpanel or is there a different interface?
How much bandwith is included in the packages?
And a big question to ask, "Who manages the dedicated server?" Who runs updates, patches etc? What about antivirus?
What about securuty?
This scratches the surface a bit as to some of the things to consider when looking at virtual servers and dedicated servers.
Rick
PS: I had actually started creating part of this post recently for a page for a site as well as a tech section in a different forum, and have edited it a bit to fit in with Steve's questions so you may see parts of this post elsewhere as well.

Hi all,
I asked this over at CAP too.
I thought I'd post a follow-up for those that may search this thread later.
from what i have gathered from the kind folks that responded is that I didn't even know the right questions to ask .. I am really surprised at all the IP stuff as it sounds like it works differently than I had imagined.
I had thought/hoped doing this wouldn't be much more than like having a folder above the folders for each individual site ... kinda like front page or I imagine most editors are like.. you open them and then choose which domain you want to work on. I thought having a package deal would be much like that.
and to my understanding a Cpanel is basically like that ... but it all sounds rather intimidating although the price is sure a reason to make the jump.
Not sure I fully understand the IP situation. It must not be an end-all as it sounds like most of you are not too concerned about that ... or am I not getting it?

It was the "really want" that got me. I take that to hopefully mean its not a big deal?
I've got time to think more about this. And I'm headed over to my hosting company to see if they have some kind of example set up so I can have a look at it and get a better idea if I can handle this or not.
Thanks again all.
