Is DMOZ Open Directory a must for a site ?

And how long does it take in average to be listed in that open directory ?

There are a ton of threads kicking around on this. To sum up... it's a good link to have, but not essential - none of my sites are listed.

But don't hold your breath on getting listed. If you do make it in it generally takes a long time (from what I've heard). And not surprisingly - the directory gets a ton of submissions and it takes a long time for the editors to get through them.

Just submit and forget, if you get in you get in. If not, don't worry too much about it.

It is important to have your site in the DMOZ directory. It takes us around a year to get listed but it gives us a good push in Serps.

Google just got rid of their own scrape/clone of the DMOZ - the Google directory. Interpret as you will..

here's my opinion. years ago it was definatly worth it but these days.....no. theres so much said about editors being corrupt (im not saying its true btw) and editors just adding their own sites etc i think it got devalued a long time ago. considering it says affiliate sites shouldnt be in there and some are says it all really

I agree with you. So being there will only send some more traffic. And having a link on a high pr site, nothing more

It is not a must however it is still a strong recognized link. Apply and it could take less than 1 month to obtain.

DMOZ is nice to have however it's not essential.

DMOZ is linked to Google because if a site does not have meta descriptions in place then they will pull feeds from DMOZ.

DMOZ listings can take anywhere from a couple of weeks to 18 months to get listed which might sound mad however there are only a few Editors on DMOZ and they are all volunteers after all

i dont understand that the most of the editors of DMOZ are webmasters themselves, then why should google give so much importance to DMOZ. though i am not sure if google gives importance to links in DMOZ.

It is not worth the time and effort. You can try once but don't expect much.

You need to know the "secret hand shake" to get listed in DMOZ.

I remember someone (I honestly can't remember who) showing me the private chats of dmoz gambling editors. One in particular. The deception and outright lies told by the person controlling the category - to keep out non-friends - was pretty disgusting. Someone right at the top of dmoz promised to me that he'd investigate. When I presented some evidence, he stopped replying. That was years ago. I doubt anything has changed.
