Do you listen to music while you work?

When walking around the office, I often notice that some of our staff wear headphones and listen to music while they do their work. Some of our staff members listen to music all the time, some listen to music some of the time, and some never listen to music at all. It got me wondering how many of the affiliates and affiliate managers who are active here at the GPWA listen to music while they work, and if they do, what they listen to and how often they do it.

No matter what your listening preferences, answer the poll and leave a comment below to let us know why you selected the answer you did. And if you do listen to music, tell us all what you listen to. And if you’re one of the “sometimes” music, tell us what factors into your decision to listen too. And finally, if you do listen to music do you think it makes you more or less productive than you would otherwise be?

I struggle to work without music, however my partner can't work with it!

Generally the type of music depends of the day of the week and how stressed I am - Monday starts of mellow with some acoustics and it gradually picks up over the week until Friday where I will be listening some music to get me a bit more live for the weekend.

To answer your question, music makes me a lot more productive IMO. It zones me out of my surrounding colleagues and focuses me solely on a good beat and my computer screen.

Does anyone here have Spotify? Would be great to get some playlists shared if so.

My worst nightmare? Forgetting my headphones

Music is key to me being able to work for up to 12 hours a day with a few breaks. Before I get to work on my desktop I fire up my music on my laptop on my desk and put the headphones on the maximum setting. It's a wonder that I can still hear. lol

I've been a napster subscriber for years and it has allowed me to add thousands of songs to my playlists. I listen to R&B, Country, Gospel, Smooth Jazz & some light rock. I love the automix feature as it allows me to find new songs of my fav artists.

I'm on my 2nd pair of boze in five years and prefer them to any other method, but once in awhile I blast my 5 speaker surround sound connected to my pc.

Once in awhile I go down to the living room or master bedroom and turn on the surround sound that was built with the house and shake the windows while watching a concert.

Music makes me more productive without a doubt.

Most of the time and varies from classical through to rock through to rap. Just not really loud for any of it. If I need to concentrate and having trouble then I'll turn it off.

I also use it as a way to stay on topic. I'll say I can't stop until the end of the album. Thanks to the wonders of iTunes, I can travel around with my entire music collection. If I could just find a way to do the same for my concert DVDs.

I listen to music when i feel bored and sleepy. Just to awaken my soul and also for me to prevent to make a nap.
I used to listen to love songs(wondering of past sweet memories) and groovy music(while dancing a little) .

    Interesting poll!

If I'm doing anything data entry related such as listing brands etc... I do have music on, but otherwise I like the silence.

I always listen to music while working, that gets me to focus on what i'm doing and not with the surroundings. Mellow, pop, and acoustic music is what i listen to all the time.

I listen to music most of the time, first i check the news on CNN or the Today show in the morning, then its on to the tunes....Bon Jovi, Aerosmith, Guns and Roses, Melissa Etheridge, The Eagles, The Stones,.....

I am most definitely more productive because the music gets my groove on and keeps me awake and alert, but on the other hand, the webmasters i write for may find some song lyrics in their content.....lollllllllllllllllllll

    Rock on baby! lol

I don't go anywhere without my ipod. I listen to music while I'm shopping, going out for lunch, at work as much of the day as allows and even when I'm falling asleep..

Acoustic is probably what I listen to the most, apart from a daily dose of Christina Aguilera..

I have my ipod on shuffle at the moment and "How many licks" by lil kim is on..

Love love love music and can't live without it.

I am crazy about music and generally always have it blaring, but NOT when I am working. I cannot concentrate if its too loud.
I have the radio on in the office, but very quietly - purely so I can keep updated with the news.

I always remember years ago when I lived in New Zealand - I used to work for a bank - AGC Finance and they used to have these little nifty gadgets ( which we still don't have in South Africa ) - it was radios built into the phones so each person had one on their desk. I used to work in an open office environment and a few seats away from me used to be a real obnoxious and arrogant Australian Guy ( no offence Dave ) and every time I put my radio on ( very quietly mind you ) he used to come over and turn it off.

It actually got quite childish because we went through this procedure about 10 times a day - he would switch it off and I would turn it back on.

One day he caught me on a bad day and after he had switched my radio off countless times - I walked over to his desk in a temper - flipped his radio on - full blast and threw it in his bin.
In hindsight, quite a childish thing to do, but he never touched my radio after that, and we even landed up becoming friends in the end.

Personally can't go wrong with Parov Stelar and / or Massive Attack. No need to be loud at all. Just give me some tunes ;o)

I have music on about 1/2 the time. I'll dial up a station that is streaming there "show". Could be classical, Classic Rock or Country. Really no rhyme or reason for the genre, just whatever I pick 1st. Sometimes I change the station if a song I don't care for comes on. If I load my music I find I spend more time picking tunes then working. I keep the volume down just so it fills the office and not the whole house.

Listening to music for me has become a pre-requisite when doing any reporting. If I had to do that in silence, I think I'd go nuts!

In any case though, I am a BIG music fan. I listen to quite a few styles, depending on my mood. My favorite though is rock - any flavor will do: Nirvana, Metallica, Guns and Roses, The Eagles, Aerosmith, Pink Floyd, Scorpions, Evanescence and Linkin Park.

Of course, you need to throw in some R&B for good dancing.

What captivates me on the other hand, is New Age music by eRa, Enigma and Vangelis.

If work places allow music why would you not listen to it? Music is the most popular thing in the world and time seems to go past faster with it.

I must admit I have a wide range or music. I love anything form The Smiths to Death Metal, lol
