Do you serve your own banners or use third parties like affiliate programs?

Many affiliates serve the banners on their websites themselves. And many affiliates use services provided by the affiliate programs they work with to serve banner advertisements for their brands. There are pluses and minuses to each approach.

When you serve banners yourself you have direct control over all of the banners served and over any cookies or other tracking performed on the visitors to your website.

If the banners on your site are served by affiliate programs, then the affiliate program takes care of keeping banners up-to-date, and so the banners served are likely to be more current and reflect current offers. But you also open up your site to tracking of your visitors by the company serving the banners when you are not doing it yourself.

With the EU directives regarding cookies that were announced last May coming into effect this May on the one-year anniversary of the initial announcment, I thought it made sense to ask about GPWA member's use of banners. To be compliant with the EU regulations you need to make sure that any third-party services that serve ads on your site are compliant in addition to making sure you are compliant yourself.

So, for this week's poll share with us whether or not you use banners and how they are served.

I ALWAYS serve banners and other creatives on my server.

If an affiliate programs' banner server is down, it could delay one of your pages from loading properly (or even keep it from loading).

That shouldn't happen if you set height and width to a banner I think...

This is what we have done as well. A only exclusion is that we cannot do anything if the gambling affiliate program only provide script-based link code.

I think all aff programs would provide you with banners via email if you asked them

I voted that we do both. Out more permanent banners like the ones on the front page and sides of the site are hosted by us but the ones we put on the reviews are not. Since I check those almost every day, it's no big deal.

Some not all. Banners don't do anything for me to be honest, just create the overall gambling feeling.

Affiliates should be redirecting and tracking their own links.

If a program makes changes to their tracking code or it is faulty then you can change it in one place instead of 100s of times.

That's kind of a different point to hosting yourself vs using aff code. I don't host my own banners but my non banner aff links run through a redirect, and for banners, the code is stored centrally and included so changing it once changes every banner (even though the banners aren't hosted on my server).

    Hi all,

This is quite interesting considering companies (we work with NetRefer) have servers in multiple locations to avoid having problems with banners not displaying, they also give us the ability to have default banners that would replace a faulty banner in a fully automatic process so that your website is not left with a 404 error or a blank page. But I do understand people wanting full control over their website.

What are your feelings about text links? Its interesting to know people's view so we can adjust internally to serve you better.

We use affiliate programs banners. I find them quite good in terms of their graphics and conversion.
