Do you twitter to increase the reach of your site(s)?

Twittering is getting more and more popular like blogging. It would be interesting to know whether it is used in our business as a communication medium.

I use it occasionally. Not a huge success, but it does get me a few visitors. I go by "CarolinaGambler" there.

I do Twitter occasionally - I just haven't decided why or seen the point of it all yet!

With all the technological advances we've seen over the past few years, if Twitter is the best we can do, then I fear we are all officially DOOMED!!

I tweet my site's blog posts... The whole system perplexes me a little, but it is easy to setup and can't hurt.

I set up a GPWA account on twitter some time ago, but it has not been used yet. The plan is to eventually tweet short news items of interest to the affiliate marketing community.

I encourage folks who are interested to follow us at http://twitter.com/gpwa, and sometime in the not too distant future you will start getting tweets from us.

I set one up yesterday (@jacobkneeshaw), more of a personal one to start. I don't really intend to use it as a tool to drive traffic, but one to keep some of my more active members engaged, and as a channel to network with people that are hard to reach elsewhere.

    Do I Twitter...hmmm

Yes..for the online gaming...I don't know how well Twitter will work. I do affiliate marketing as well as gambling portals and use Twitter for my marketing programs and I will tell you it is Very successful if done right.
Very easy to get 1000 followers quickly and then run some marketing along with comments and information.

Indeed, I Twitter as well, specifially for my gambling site. I post special coupons codes, tournaments, that are short and sweet. I do get notices that people are "following me."

I think the ultimate use will eventually be that you can actually receive "tweets" to your cell phone. Many do this now.

There is the story of a Journalist who was arrested in Afghanistan and sent a quick text to his twitter account - and all his friends (followers) were able to find him. Interesting story.

But, I think it is the quick, short notice of it that I like. I know that those following me all already are interested in what I have to offer.

Can't really judge conversions, but I use a 301 redirect link to an affiliate link through my server which I then check stats for. Slowly growing, but it does work.

What does it cost actually? Is it like sms? Do you have to pay for outbound as well as inbound tweets, including Roaming charges? Or how does it work?

To my knowlege, standard text messaging rates do apply. For example, if I wish to send a "tweet" from my phone, I enter a specific number in the phone number space for text messaging and then create the short message (140 char.) and send.

It then goes to my online twitter account as a post and then it would be sent out to all my "followers" who have chosen to receive "tweets" on their cell phone.

Other than that, it is free.

well I have had an account there for a couple of weeks now and initial indications are pretty bad.

Just seems like another webmaster circle-jerk really with no 'real' traffic. At least that's what it seems like. Random ppl who find me are usually other poker/gambling webmasters typing 'poker' into the search.

I've added random celebs to try and increase exposure and see how that goes.

Maybe It needs more time but doens't hurt to login and update once a day.

It certainly depends how you use it

AGD is using Twitter to keep Affiliates informed of new terms alerts... by 'following' the tweet, you will get notifications that terms have been changed So - for that purpose it is useful to me.

I see twitter much like an RSS aggregator. You follow a bunch of feeds (the people you follow) with each item (the tweet) showing up in chronological order in your twitter home.

There was something on ABC News last Wednesday... Half of congress was on their blackberries during President Obama's speech to the joint congress twittering away.

I agree with Sardwyn - my view of Twitter is that it's just a bunch of marketers and techie geeks all following each other. And the whole language of it...Tweets, retweets, etc...it just makes me cringe.

    It's the most self-indulgent thing on the internet. So, that's a 'no, I don't use it' !
