I do not have any conclusive evidence about H1,H2,H3 ideal frequency etc, but I do like to use them as they were intended. They are simply heading that define the hierachy of the content. I usually use h1 only once. In an extreme case were my page is very long, I might use two h1 tags.

I feel free to use h2 2 to 3 times on a page, and h3 when required.

If you remember to write reasonably you will do fine. I always like to keep in mind that Google is looking for pages that are written for readers, and not search engines. I admit, it's hard sometimes because I started off with a "write for search engine" mentality.

I'm sure it will not take long for you to simply go back and fix your tags.

I agree with Wagerx on this. I personally think over-using h1 tags could work against you in the engines.

If your use of h1 is used more for formatting of larger fonts etc, you can use css to control what font size etc each htag is.

Wish I had know that last year, I only learned the css trick over the past 6 months. Once I set up pages with proper tags my rankings and PR increased.

I try to do it as h1 is the main page focus, h2 is a sub catagory, h3 is a sub of the sub, h4 = sub, sub, sub.

Next topic, start with h2 and repeat.

    lather, rinse, repeat.

The last site I did (from a new url, not redo) was indexed in record time and grabbed PR1 within one month.

H1 and h2 tags are good in on page optimization aside from the meta tags.
Metas are the first that reads by the google and it follows the h tags. They also consider some anchor text and alt tags on the content. I mean this simple customization tips are the basic for the SEO's.
