Facebook to ban online gambling ads

Facebook is one of the most popular sites on the Internet. In fact, Buzzy is checking is Facebook at the same time he's writing this post. A number of blogs are reporting that the networking site will ban online gambling advertisements.

Online gambling is just one of a number of topics that Facebook will ban. Other topics include "cameras, firearms, tobacco, gambling uncertified pharmaceuticals, pyramid schemes and nudity," according to 4Flush.

Facebook will be removing all forms of online gambling advertising including: bingo, sportsbooks, poker and casinos. Oddly enough Facebook has many applications that are casino games that people can play, though they are free for members to enjoy.

Awwww. That's too bad. And just when CAP was getting started with their new re-branding media blitz about how they are the biggest thing in online gambling and so much better than everyone else.

I guess they'll have to go back to more old tactics.

Surprised to see facebook being so US-centric and exporting the official US government stance around the world. Facebook have been screwing up a lot recently.

I just hope that they don't start pinging gambling related pages. I reckon that mine would have to go - as it's called GoonersGuide to Gambling (which is a bit of a giveaway) ...

This will also affect several of the popular Zynga games who offer a lot of the games like Mafia Wars and Farmworld and the such.

Players can earn "reward points" in their games by signing up to places via in game affiliate links, and I've noticed poker, bingo and casino sites embedded in their games.

I also hope it stops with the advertising. They say it won't effect our social sites, but you never know.

    Someone else outlawing gambling

I wonder if those scammy/bogus ads for free stuff (picture denotes pair of Nike runners) will also be on the Facebook hit list.

Placing the kibosh on uncertified pharmaceuticals is a good one

    Cheers

Looks like that there are still a lot of Bush-holdovers in the DOJ, and they are still exerting their influence big time. Facebook's decision is certainly a reflection of that. I'm very disappointed that the Obama administration seems to be continuing on with the Bush anti-gambling sentiments, or at minimum, just turning the other cheek, and letting things continue as usual. Although I feel that US-legalization of the online gambling industry will be the beginning of the end for affiliates in this industry, I'm amazed that the current administration has not considered legalization more seriously during 2009, especially since the US debt ceiling was just raised to 12.4 TT. Legalization would obviously be a large source of tax revenue.

On a separate note, don't you love the US Republican Senators that are vehemently complaining how Democrats "sneaked" the passage of the Health Bill through the Senate on Christmas Eve.........I guess many of them have a short memory, when UIGEA was snuck through in the 23rd hour, as part of a ports bill.

Correct, they never accepted gambling ads. So I was told by a representative, but the article could indeed relate to social games.

They may not accept gambling ads, but i will always publish my reviews of gambling sites on my JustArsenal Facebook and Twitter pages. Surely they won't delve that deeply!

Rick I was going to say the same thing. It is logical for things like nudity and uncertified pharmaceuticals to be banned, but cameras?

    What threat do camera's pose?

Ever had a camera thrown at you? OUCH!
In all seriousness I don't get that either. So anyways after research, there is a misquote: was spy cameras. Still not sure the big deal.

PS, they banning advertisers, NOT fanpages etc.
