    Default Google Analytics events tracking

    I want a click to an affiliate link to be some sort of a goal, or event, in Google Analytics so I can track them and see which page converts and which doesn't.

    I looked at some tutorials online but couldn't find an answer. Maybe someone here knows how to set this up?

    Here is my Google Tag Manager Setup for this

    Create a container, publish it

    Enable the Built-In Variables you need .. I have the following enabled on mine

    Click Classes
    Click Element
    Click ID
    Click Target
    Click Text
    Click URL
    Event
    Page Hostname
    Page Path
    Page URL
    Referrer

    create a Trigger
    "Merchant Link Click Trigger"

    Trigger type> Click - All Elements
    Trigger fires on Some Clicks - in my case "Click URL contains /out/"

    Create a TAG
    "Click To Merchant Tag"
    Type> Universal Analytics
    Track Type> Event
    Category > click-to-merchant
    action> {{Click URL}}
    label > {{Click URL}}
    value > {{Page URL}}
    Non Interaction hit> FALSE
    checked - enable overriding settings in this tag
    Add UA ID
    advanced settings - fire once per event

    Now assign your trigger to your tag..

    publish your workspace, and after you get clicks on your /out/ links, you should see events report in analytics under behaviour events..

    eg yoursite.com/out/somemerchant - number of clicks

    have a look in google analytics realtime to debug, or one of the browser extensions that are available like tag assistant
    https://chrome.google.com/webstore/d...okphdefk?hl=en

    Now to set up those events as Goals,
    go to goals in analytics admin, create a new goal,

    setup a "place an order" type goal
    name> Click To Merchant
    type> event
    goal details>
    category equals to click-to-merchant
    other 3 fields leave empty

    click save.

    enjoy

    Hey dan

    sheeeit, i must have omitted some little essential detail.

    have a look at this guide, I recall using an article like this to get started with the event tracking part .. after that setting the event category as a goal is easy.

    https://www.optimizesmart.com/event-...omplete-guide/

    let me know if this is of any help / where you are getting stuck.

    My events are firing (I checked with the Preview tool) but are not being tracked by Google Analytics. Here are the values of the event:

    Type: Google Analytics: Universal Analytics
    Firing Status: Succeeded
    Non-Interaction Hit: false
    Enable overriding settings in this tag: false
    Value: (shows the URL of the outgoing link accurately)
    Category: 'Clickses'
    Track Type: 'TRACK_EVENT'
    Google Analytics Settings:
    {
    doubleClick: false,
    setTrackerName: false,
    useDebugVersion: false,
    useHashAutoLink: false,
    decorateFormsAutoLink: false,
    enableLinkId: false,
    enableEcommerce: false,
    trackingId: (shows my UA-xxxxxxxxx-x accurately)
    fieldsToSet: [{fieldName: 'cookieDomain', value: 'auto'}]
    }
    Action: 'Actionses'
    Label: (shows URL of the page where the link was clicked)

    I tried to set this up with another website, same thing. Event fires but isn't tracked in GA. I don't have any view filters in GA, all settings are default.

    Any ideas?

    I had to wait a week to see how it behaves. It's tracking events, though I don't see nearly as many clicks as in affiliate back ends and in my Wordpress plugin that tracks outbound clicks.

    It's either not tracking every click or the aff stats are wrong by an order of magnitude (1 in 10 is an actual click).

    But this level of data is fantastic. Next I'll assign goal values to these events, based on the click to NDA rate and the average lifetime player value.

    Images can be pasted here, although it is helpful if they are not huge in weight or bigger then the average screen.

    When attempting to post the image:
    Select insert image
    From computer
    Browse to image
    If given the choice choose basic uploader

    Glad to see you got it working Dan, and thank you so much ddm for taking the extra time and effort to explain the setup in detail as it may well be helping many other members to follow the steps you laid out.

    Good question Dan. I used it as the inspiration for this week's newsletter poll:

    Do you use Google Analytics event tracking?
