Greece, a country that has seen its fair share of problems in the last few months, has chosen to defy the European Union over the deregulation of online gambling.
A draft law in Greece on online gambling states that licensed operators would have to "set up a subsidiary based in Greece, locate gambling servers in the country, and process transactions exclusively through Greek banks," according to the Financial Times.
From the Financial Times:
European gaming operators complain the law discriminates in favour of Opap, a state-controlled owned gaming company that is due to be fully privatised later this year.
“We and other operators are facing opposition from draft regulation which is geared towards the protection of a monopoly and is in contradiction of EU law,” said Martin Cruddace, chief legal and regulatory affairs officer at Betfair, a UK online gaming operator.
