Wow after taking that poll I realize that I use my mobile phone for everything! Is that a bad thing? It really does come in handy for everyday life. I don't know what I would do without my Iphone. It's like my baby lol.
I read an article in a New York Times weekly issue for European papers titled: 'In many parts of the world, a cellphone is sufficient'. And they say: "Not for the first time, America and much of the world are moving in different ways. America's innovators, building for an ever-expanding bandwith network, are spiralling toward fancier, costlier, more network-hungry and status-giving devices; meanwhile, their counterparts in developing nations are innovating to find even more uses for cheap, basic cellphones."
They mention several examples.
1. An Indian company is selling handsets for less than $25, with one-cent-a-minute phone calls across India and one-cent text mesages and no monthly charge - while earning fat profits.
2. Some are using text messages India as well as in Palestine for offering job-hunting services.
3. In Kenya, there is a project called M-Pesa that lets you convert cash into cellphone money at your local grocer, and this money can instantly be wired to anyone with a phone, thus getting rid of expensive plastic cards.
I think the key phrase in that is "developing nations".
It is human nature to be inquisitive and hungry for more. Developed countries like the States have the resources and technology to invest into these innovations.
Developing countries have a much more limited budget and must fit the needs of their people. As such, developing phones that are cost-efficient and capable of performing tasks that are essential to THEIR daily tasks is more important than developing a phone that supports apps and 'fun' programs.
