Personally, and from what I've read, the best way to grow your twitter traffic is by quality, not quantity.

So by selectively following people that are related to your interests/industry, and posting fresh, relevant and interesting content yourself, so that hopefully those people will in turn start to follow you. The key is to have a good reason for people to follow-you.

Also making sure to update your Twitter details anywhere else you promote - so on your website, in your email signature, on your facebook page, etc.

How many followers are you trying to get on a daily basis? This may be more your problem as new accounts that try and follow too many other users in a short space of time get picked up by Twitter.

1000 in a day is almost impossible. In these cases, there's probably something that tags you as a possible spammer and bans you.

If you focus your efforts on quality instead of quality (like Julia said earlier), you won't need to target 1000 accounts per day. The ones who are relevant and interested will follow and you will build a better reputation.

I couldn't agree more The aim of Twitter is not that of a race to see who can generate the greatest number of followers; At the end of the day, you're hoping that your followers can eventually be converted into $.

In terms of 'quality', one tip is to see who else your followers are following (because they're likely to be a relatively homogeneous group) and start following the ones who relate to your business. Also, remember that "re-tweeting" is a often taken as a form of compliment, so re-tweet quality content! Facebook and Twitter should not be used as a means of selling your product, but rather for fostering quality relationships

I use Twellow as well, and I find a lot of the people that I follow.... also follow me back... Its also nice that there is lots of relevant people to follow as well.

Yeah that sounds like a pretty basic way of getting followers, just post a "follow me on twitter" on your site, even though, it probably isn't the fastest way to get followers but it shows the viewers that if your site has lots of good information then on twitter it will be the same!
