How long do you typically wait for a web page to load before giving up?

Nobody likes to wait a long time for a web page to load. And, as has been noted in the forums, and on the 9th of April 2010 Google officially announced that page speed was going to be taken into account in search results.

So, for this week's question, I'd like to ask about your surfing habits. How long do you typically wait for a page to load before giving up and heading somewhere else?

I like my fast Internet, and slow-loading pages is my pet peeve. Four seconds is about my max.

I like to see something happening in 2 seconds and something I can read in 4-5 seconds.

If the page continues to load things down below or in seperate iframes then that's fine.

A few seconds for initial loading, something I can see and under 5 seconds for the page. I hate landing somewhere that has a boatload of crap loading that makes the page jump when it appears.

The average time for me is about 5 seconds before something starts coming up on the screen!

Depends what the content of the page is, personally. Breaking news about Robbie Savage retiring? I'll wait all day! A page some stranger has recommended to me? 5 seconds if they're lucky.

I voted 3 sec or less.

I guess the page would not have to be fully loaded, but I will have to see something in 3 sec.

I'd say about 5 seconds generally.

But if it's something I really need or want to check then I can definitely wait longer.

I'm a 5 second sorta guy. But on mobile devices I give it more time. What I hate is image heavy pages. I use opera and it shows the number of different elements it has to load. Cheeses me off when some pages are 100+ items to load.

Haha, who gives up after 3 seconds? People with OCD probably. 3 seconds is nothing.

You see.... there are 2 ways of thinking about it. If it is my email or a site I visit because I need to then time is no option. I will have to wait the full 2 mins and have no choice.

If it is a brand new site I found through Google then depends what mood I am in, around 10 seconds on a good day and probs around 5 on a bad.

I remember in the old dial up days, 30 seconds was considered something to aim for.

10 seconds is about my attention span, but I have to be careful as sometimes it's a browser hang and not the site's fault. Double check always.

Oh Man, Dial up sucked. I never had the internet back then but back then My friend had it and had a piczo site it took him a minute or so per page load. We spent hours just finding 1 page online, it was cool stuff back then so it was well worth the wait.

It depends on the site that I value, if the site has more value for me(news site, informative and gaming site) then i'll wait for about 10-15 seconds but if it doesn't load for the period of given time, then i'll leave and close it and find for another interesting one!
