Question How many undeveloped domains do you own?

Periodically GPWA members post long lists of domains for sale. One such list, with well over 100 domains, that has had some recent activity was initially published nearly a year ago by MJM here: .com Domains For Sale - Big List. I know MJM is not alone in having a large number of undeveloped domains - I have over 100 of them myself.

So, for this week's poll, I thought I would ask folks how many undeveloped domains they own. Besides indicating how many such domains you own in the poll, be sure to post your thoughts on undeveloped domains. Do you expect to increase or decrease the number you own? Do you do anything with them at all, or leave them completely vacant? Do you redirect any of them to active domains (for example, a .org site to the corresponding .com site) Do you have plans to use any of them soon?

    Thanks,

    Michael

    250+.

I expect a decrease as I am not extending most of them anymore. Plans enough, but I try to be a bit realistic. I won't run 250 websites on my own. 25 neither.

I've had even way more than 500, but decided some months ago to not pay every month for domains that I will never use.

I’ve turned into a domain snob, if it’s not a great domain I’m no longer keeping them.
ive been doing this for a year or two.

the days of trading xxx domains are long gone. I used to love finding and flipping domains

I was always fascinated by the prospect of doing this - but never got into it.
I have six "developed" domains - but five of them are simply static - existing simply because I don't want to kill them off.

What was it like in the hey-day? Would it earn a living? What would a meh! domain bring?
How about now? How much has it diminished and why do you think that is?

I've reduced the number of underdeveloped domains that I own from over 1,000 to under 50. There's no point keeping them when I don't have enough time to develop or market them.

At one stage many moons ago, I was domain wh#re. Practically every operational site, I'd register all possible domain ext for that brand.

However, these days, with so many ext available, it's a waste of cash IMHO, not to mention a futile effort, cause someone could easily just add a hyphen etc.

I've since heavily reduced the domains I own, to the point where it's around 35 or so. I plan on reducing this further. Can't see the point in paying for domains I'm not using, or more to the point, domains I doubt will ever be used.

200 or so, some time you just get on a roll with a naming idea and the buy button! I do let a lot fall off on renewalls though as I looks and say that was just not a good name.

when I first got into affiliate marketing and I was learning my trade. I would look at meh domains with x’xxx exact match searches xxxpoker.net with 5k exact matches would bring in medium 3 figures. I rhave never days finding a domain and listing it on PAP and selling it the same day for profit.

I never had enough to make a living from but always good for beer money, in the early days.

I had a few hundreds, now less than 50. The income from parked domains has fallen drastically due by changes in search engines, etc.

My list of domains is getting shorter year by year too, there is no reason for me to keep them even though these domains brought me some income in the past.

Now I keep domains that in my opinion can be used as a brand or EMDs that I am planning to develop by myself or will not loose their value in the future.

I now have about 40-50 and it's reducing by the week.

I used to have about 100, as I used to just buy it if I liked the name and think 'I'll do something with that in the future' but the future is now and most of them I've not done a thing with, so I'm only keeping really good ones now.

Also I bought most of them at Go Daddy, and they have upped their renewal fees extortionately recently, so in light of the fact that I can't be bothered transferring them all over to a new domain name provider, I am simply reducing my portfolio, especially anything low quality EMD-ish.

    Side note:
Almost all registrars were forced to raise their fees, especially if they had not had increases in recent years.

The amount that is paid to top level for domains has increased.
    https://domainnamewire.com/2017/07/28/verisign-net/

Some registrars saw the opportunity to gouge a little bit it seems, and some were forced to increase prices because they had been absorbing the small yearly increases.

    /end side note

I also have a handful of names I never developed, and I most often either redirect to a live site, or just send direct to a casino landing page from a short list of operators. You pick up that odd player, even if only 1 per year, can easily pay to keep the name registered.
