If you had $5000 to spend on your website...

    Good Day All,

I've been asked the same question many times before, by friends and colleagues alike:' If you had $5000 to spend on your website, what would it be utilised for?".

It would be interesting to hear your expert opinion/s regarding the above question.

    Many thanks!

    Cheers

I would hire someone to translate my website into 10 languages and from the remaining money i would get 10 different domains for each language.

    Stylish website btw.

I would spend it on beer.

It depends on your skill set, and your plans. Do you want to improve the exisiting site - or buy other sites?

Most people would tend to use the money to get content, or site coding, or graphics depending on what they already have and what they can provide themselves.

Some people would go out and "buy links" to get more traffic, and work on onsite SEO optimisation.

In the case of the site you have, you appear to have most of that covered, so I'd be spending it to give the site some personality, and create some sort of USP.

Your site is a nice looking site - but obviously SEO focused, and a little disjointed (front page very different for the rest) and the whole thing feels very much a cookie cut template.

You will get clicks from a targeted search engine visitor that arrives - but would you get a repeat visit - or would the visitor bookmark you to use again?

I'd be looking for some sort of valuable timely content to include that would drive loyalty from readers and generate repeat visits.

    Freaking hilarious! Good one Melvine!

To the Gooner, your insight and advise commands respect. Many thanks, will work on the points given.

I've decided to work on the site again after 2 years, believe it or not I started making some money! Why let something go to waste that generates cash. It's going to be freaking hard work and many swear words, especially in the SEO department, but I believe it can be done.

    Cheers

I'd use the money to do something that I could not do for myself. In this case it would be language translation for a couple sites.

I don't buy links, have folks write articles or have anyone do any SEO. The first two are very risky and the SEO part IMO should be learned and done by yourself if you are serious about being a webmaster. Best of luck with it.

I would use most of it to get some excellent content created for the site. I would use some of it to buy some advertising on some big sites or portals out there for brand recognition. I would invest in getting some sort of email capture so that you can re-market to the players that come to your site.

    Good luck.

If my site looked ok and I was happy with it, and have 5k more, I would

    1. Buy 1 good pr6 link or higher
    2. Some PPC (google adsense maybe, is some strategic words for real fast money, or Bing as long as the current bug is there)
    3. Buy another domain with exist traffic and links
    4. Setup a autoblog
    5. buy a beer

I would also spend some of the money on translating my site into several other languages, and the rest would be used for advertising.

Trasnlating good idea, but then you need links etc to promote that. If i . If I was going to go into differnt languages, I do the URL, hosting etc in that country. Otherwise, Google translate / static pages for me....

Lots of languages do not translate properly. Study the culture first then translate because certain words have different meanings. Plus it will ad creditability IMO.

That's very true and why you have to be very careful to get it done properly. That's why it's an expensive service.

I've read nightmare stories regarding folks paying to have their sites translated by others.

Agreed - translating can be done very badly sometimes, especially if the translator is not native speaking or forgets random accents etc..

For example, the word for casino in Italian is casinò, and if you leave the accent off the o, it becomes something like a brothel.

The first thing that comes to mind when asked the question of what I'd do with 5k is do you want short term or long term returns on your money?
