More Link Questions.....

I wonder if anyone here can answer some questions about some link exchanges I have done recently....

I only have a handful of links at the moment and use a piece of software to check the validity of the linkback. Some come back as successfully found and some do not, however I can see them all using a browser and they are all just a couple of levels deep.

I notice that some of these link pages contain robots exclusions or meta tag exclusions (noindex) on the links page of the remote sites.

If this software can't see the links, does it mean that google can't either ? Do linkbacks become pointless if the remote site prohibits google from indexing the links pages ?

Sorry if this is a stupid question, I am fairly new to link exchanges and I don't want to waste time with irrelevant links.

Hi.

First, that's not a stupid question. If the page has a no index or no follow meta tag then the links are no good. Same goes if the individual link has a no follow. As to the robots.txt, that would depend on the robots that are excluded; if googlebot and other se bots are excluded then that's no good either.

Anyone who blocks robots from link pages is a cheater, trying to get something for nothing. You would be doing everyone a favor by naming the sites that do that. Name and shame.

I agree, name and shame. No point us all losing out.

What I do when I receive a new link request, from a site I like and want to swap with, is to trace the linkage from the front page to the page my link is on, checking the code as I go for nofollow or any other means of deterring the search engine spiders.

I think it's good practice to do this and saves wasted time.

Good tips, thankyou for all the responses

I looked into the sites after I made the post last night and removed them all from the link exchange. All six came from the same IP address and all looked identical with the exception of the banner at the top (baccarat/slots/roulette etc)

I had a look at these sites recently and cannot find noindex listed anywhere within the code anymore, i dont think its really fair to name them incase I have made some sort of blunder and misread the tags.
I am fairly new to all this and don't want to go upsetting people un-necessarily if its a mistake on my part.

To save time at the beginning I started using web based link exchange program, which I don't think did me any favours with the quality of links I had. Have done a little work on some proper links recently and noticed the visitor stats rocket and lots of new pages get indexed, so now going in the right direction.... Lesson Learned: Cutting Corners is bad !

you can explain how I can know this. I see only the cache of google.

I use this tool and it's great it tells you who are your backlinks, the anchor text used, PR of those pages and also those who have added a no follow to your links

When you exchange links to it manually, and make sure it's:

• At most three clicks from the main page.
• "nofollow" as a link attribute. It does you no good.
• exclusion of the directory or page in the robots.txt file

I've found most of my link exchange "partners" tend to remove the links within a few months. the best link partners have been the ones inside the same "casino" theme industry. (Like the ones you meet here)
