My Cat Swallowed a Twisting Balloon

This morning my cat swallowed a balloon and I'm starting to really get worried because they said he might need surgery if we can't get him to throw it up or pass it. I told them I cannot afford that and they just said sorry we can put him to sleep for you if it comes to that. I am so upset about this and I just don't know what to do!

i've had people tell me to give the cat some butter to help hairballs pass, rather than having the cat puke them up. You can also get cat laxatives to help keep everything moving. You might also check with other vets about surgery, either for a cheaper price or possibly the ability pay over time, etc. Also some places have pet charities that sometimes can help out. Good luck i hope you find that balloon in the litter box today.

That's terrible i can imagine how upset and helpless you must be.

Apart from going to the vet, i'm not really sure what else to suggest. Like AmCan said, you should seek other vets and hopefully you'll find something more reasonable.

Although i don't know much about cats, i'm thinking he'll eventually poop or puke it out. Pay close attention to him and keep him close.

Good luck dear hope he gets that balloon out soon.

Well the balloon has not come out yet but he did go number 2. He seems to be okay so far and I'm just going to hope for the best. If he stops going or starts to throw up that's when they said he would need surgery.

Today we went through the whole house to baby proof it so he wouldn't eat anything else. He will try to eat the strangest things I think he might have feline pica or something..

    I hope he passes it..

Just out of curiosity - it is not possible that the stomach acid will break it down?

    Hey Lizzy,

it should take a few days to pass, just make sure kitty keeps using the kitty litter, and for throw up - if they stop doing 2's and start throwing up - vet time.

    Good luck.

    Hi Luckylyzzy,

I am so sorry about your cat’s dilemma. I found a couple of links with comments about how to remove foreign objects from cats and dogs, I hope they help. http://www.catster.com/answers/quest...remedies-31177

Perhaps is not a good idea to wait until it comes out on its own.

    Regards,

Thanks for the help guys I have good news!! I found the balloon last night in the litter box and he is out of danger.

We first gave him 1 tsp peroxide the day it happened and he did not throw it up. Then we were told to give him a piece of a pepsid to ease his tummy from the peroxide. I gave him some butter too just to help things slide smoothly lol. Thankfully he had no trouble passing it.

My whole family all cheered over the scooped up balloon poop while our two kitties looked at us like we had lost our minds! I'm just glad the wait is over and I can finally stop worrying about him.

I was told that the balloon would not break down on it's own. I guess rubbery objects are pretty tough.

Haha great news. I am imagining mum (you) holding up the ballon in one hand by the finger tips, huge grin on your face, showing it to the rest of the house!

    Go Kitty.

PS a friends friend has a big dog puppy, and big dog puppy swallowed a sock. That had to be operated to remove it. He keeps chewing and swallowing things apparently.

My Dog ... Mister Murphy... if he finds my sock on the floor, he picks it up and runs around the house with it like a secruity blanket.

I actually held it in the scooper and my two girls who are nine and five were clapping and cheering! But I was definitely grinning ear to ear.

My grandparents had a Siberian Husky named Sasha when I was a kid and she would eat ANYTHING off the ground. She too swallowed a sock but the peroxide trick worked on her within minutes. When the cat failed to throw up from the peroxide I was thinking.. Now what??

By the way peroxide has hardly any taste at all and it's a great alternative to surgery in case anyone's pet ever swallows something. Just check with the vet first to find the correct dose.

Nice to see your cat pass the balloon. Good thing he didn't have gas.
