Newbie looking for advice

I run a poker staking site and I am trying to best figure out how to drive people to my site. Thanks to member thepokerkeep I found out how to optimize my key words and such but I am wondering what any of you know about google adwords and if it is worth it. Also if it is how much should I pay for clicks or should i just pay for impressions. will either of these help with my google page ranking and my key word "poker staking"
right now i do not even show up on google with this key phrase but I am told that there will be a lag time before it shows. Any help would be greatly appreciated.

Ok well then I guess that answers that question.

My site allows players to stake and be staked by other players into poker games and tournaments both live and online. I also have referral bonuses for referrers based on the amount of income a referal generates my site. My goal is to drive people to my site obviously so where would i go here to find out how best to do this. Im not afraid to spend some money on advertising but am totally clueless as to where to do it at.

This is the best place (in my humble opinion) to get help with your site.
The members are super helpful and there are numerous threads dedicated to seo and other related areas of concern to new webmasters.
Take a stroll through the archives, you'll be amazed at what you can learn.
If your domain has been active for a minimum 3 months, apply for "private member status", so you can access the really juicy stuff

My advice: don't pay for any clicks or impressions. I think it's useless, if you want to spend some money, it's better to hire a good content writer and post every day interesting articles based on your keywords. Google will see that your site is updated very often, and will start indexing your site quicker and quicker, and soon you will have a good traffic from Google and other search engines.

Your advice is spot-on. This day and age there are few companies that sell clicks/impressions that are worth anything.

If you want to make money it is all about the hard seo work.

You do see sites which slip through the 'no gambling' Google Adwords rules, but it's not worth the time or effort - Google will find out soon enough.

I definitely agree with Aksana in that if you have money to invest then get more content. Then: after a new page with original & interesting content has been indexed get it submitted to article submission directories. Only use submission sites which allow you to include backlinks and target your sites keyword phrases. There are plenty of free ones out there, so the only additional investment is with your time.

Google does now take PPC, although it is very expensive!

Google now does accept gambling advertisers, but the problem that brings is that,
advertisers who wanted to advertise on gambling related key words now can, so now it is very competitive, and because of this competition the price you will need to pay for your site to appear higher up the listings is a lot higher.

For example, if you want to buy something of "Ebay" and there is only 2 people bidding for that item, then the price will not increase by much. But if there are a lot of people bidding on that item, the the price will increase.

This is the nature of an auction based system, which both adwords and ebay operate on.

Also, to get you're site on the google page ranking you should aim for more niche keywords (or you can pay more)..
