Default Ontario urging feds to legalize single event sports betting

The Toronto Sun obtained a letter sent from provincial Finance Minister Vic Fedeli to federal Finance Minister Bill Morneau on Friday asking for “an amendment to the Criminal Code of Canada that would legalize single event sports wagering in Canada.”

Currently, Ontarians can legally use the OLG’s Pro-Line betting system but have to bet parlays.

    From the Toronto Sun:

“Single event sports wagering is one of the fastest growing categories of gambling entertainment,” Fedeli writes to Morneau. “In fact, in a typical year, more than 90 % of the sports dollars wagered in Nevada sportsbooks are on single event bets.”

In the letter Fedeli points to changes down south that will impact provinces like Ontario.

“Last spring the U.S. Supreme Court authored a decision giving state lawmakers the opportunity to legalize single sports betting in their states,” he writes.

“Given the absence of legal alternatives, Canadian consumers are increasingly turning to illegal, off-shore sportsbooks, or to U.S.-based casinos, which offer single event sports wagering,” he writes.

“Recent estimates indicate illegal single event sports betting generates $110 million (CDN) per year in revenue, in Ontario alone.”

You never know. There's a good chance that they just might go ahead and legalize this someday.

I'm surprise that Canada and USA are so far behind when it comes to things like gambling, in particular poker and sports betting.

It's the weirdest things that make North America unique, but gosh, they sure do have some idiosyncrasies that just don't make any sense to me. No offense.

They might as well legalize it .... bets will take place regardless via other means. At least legalized it will come regulated and most importantly for the government another revenue stream.
