Default Reopening of UK land-based casinos is delayed

After announcing on 17 July that land-based casinos would be able to reopen on 1 August, UK Prime Minister Boris Johnson yesterday postponed plans to allow "high-risk venues such as casinos, bowling alleys and ice rinks" to re-open on Saturday.

They will have to wait at least another two weeks, he said.

    From Bloomberg.com:

While he insisted he does not want to reimpose a “full national lockdown,” the premier said the public must obey the rules to avoid more drastic action.

“Our assessment is that we should now squeeze that brake pedal in order to keep the virus under control,” Johnson said in a televised press conference on Friday. “We cannot be complacent. I won’t stand by and allow this virus to cause more pain and more heartache in our country.”
The decision was questioned by Betting and Gaming Council CEO Michael Dugher on Twitter:

There is no evidence that casinos are “higher risk” venues + what happened to the Govt’s local lockdown strategy? Why should a casino business remain closed in Bristol in the south west, where Covid is low, because there’s a spike in greater Manchester? Big threat to jobs.
Meanwhile, in Scotland, First Minister Nicola Sturgeon announced a "provisional date" of 24 August for the country’s casinos and bingo halls to reopen.

No big surprise here. With the direction that the UK is going in regards to Covid19 the results are not looking the best. Parts of the UK have again put in place tougher restrictions to try to get things under control.

Hope the UK will get things together so businesses can once again get back to some form of "normalcy".

With the direction that infections are steadily heading, I can't see the casino decision being reversed any time soon sadly.

Speculation that pubs will have to close again in September when schools reopen to maintain some kind of status quo won't go down particularly well I'd image, rightly or wrongly.

The timing of the extension for casino closures was unfortunate as many brought staff back off furlough to prepare for opening only to be told they couldn't open. I think the mixed messaging is what is annoying people and the industry.

Also by branding casinos as 'higher risk' it will naturally mean a lot of people won't go to them even when they do open.
