    SEO backlinks showing and quality

    Hi

I've got a couple of questions re backlinks - when they start to show up and their quality. Hoping someone on the forum can help.

I've been building some backlinks to my poker site, but some - notably the link from my Twitter feed homepage, Facebook fan page, and Google profile page - aren't showing up. They've been up for about 2 months now. Other backlinks I've created are starting to show up, but they're taking between 30-60 days for Google to index. Does that sound right?

Second question: if I build a backlink from Site A to my site, and use the anchor text 'poker', then I go back to the same page on Site A and create another link with the anchor text 'online poker', which one does Google see/score? (Don't worry about the text examples, I realise I'll never score with them, they're just examples). And if I build the 'poker' link on Site A back to my site, and then go to a different page on Site A and build the 'online poker' link, will Google score them both? I thought Google only scored one backlink from Site A to my site (and possibly one link from Site A's server to my site), but a friend is telling me otherwise.

    Any advise/comments/assistance much appreciated.

If you are checking your backlinks with Google outside the webmaster console, you will never see your recent backlinks count. Ex. link:site.com will not provide your the recent total backlinks your site have. To check on what google sees as your backlinks, make use the Google Webmaster. You can activate it with your gmail account. Add your site, verify, add sitemap and wait for google to report to you your site's backlinks along with crawl errors and many other features within you can use. Alternatively, you can also use Yahoo Site Explorer to check on your real backlinks count. And if you want to check on the strength on each backlinks your site have, you may make use of the free link analysis tool linkdiagnosis.com provides.

According to one of the YouMoz members writeup, only one anchor text will be count for the link, if the same link has been coded with two or more different anchor text in the same page.

OK, so now you have 6 urls referring to the same page. Remember the "first link counts" rule? It says that it such a situation Google will follow the anchor text of only the first link. Since now there have been at least 2 exceptions from this rule:
    • if you place 2 links to the same page and one of them is the text link but the other - the graphic one, Google will count the anchor text of the text link regardless of their order;
    • if you place 2 text links to the same page and the first one is nofollowed link, there may occur some problems with indexation of such a page.

This is a good way to go compared to the above.

Thanks for the detailed answer. I should have added in some other points: I'm already using Google Webmaster and using opensiteexplore at SEOmoz, plus the link: operator in Yahoo.com.

I'm getting different results from all three. The backlinks I've set up are slowly starting to show up in Webmaster, and I guess this is due to the slow indexing frequency by Google of my site which has PR 0.

But I would have thought the Facebook, Twitter and Google Profile links would have shown up by now. The Facebook page was set up in June/July, and I can't understand why this link isn't showing under any of the methods above.

    Any ideas?

dont worry abut the facebook, twitter and google links as they are 'nofollow' and wont gve any "seo" benefit anyway. and dont worry about PR either, just keep building quality, relevent links and you'll do ok

Facebook and Twitter will never show up as backlinks, but you can't say out of hand that Google will not value them when they rate your webpage.
Both my Facebook page (PR3) and my Twitter page (PR4) have been ranked by google, but they dont show as backlinks!

Never assume what Google does or does not use, just carry on building an interesting website and recognition will follow....

    Backlinks

My backlinks started showing up about four weeks after I uploaded to Go Daddy and I waited a week to submit to Google (don't ask). The GPWA and other blogs showed up first and I still have a truckload from twitter and Digg and other blogs that haven't popped up yet. My article submissions haven't shown yet so i guess it all works at the speed of Google. I have heard that Twitter links don't show up at all. They do show up on my URL traffic report I access from Go Daddy and I am getting lots of viewings but no followers. No problem there I'll take viewings over followers anyday..

    Hope that helped

Backlinking is one crucial element, quality inward links attach weight to the website popularity and search engine ranking. Search engines watch for related backlinks signalling to your website.

    Concerning "poker" and "online poker"

Don't forget that the score you recieve has a bit to do with the quality of the page that is linking to you, the content on the page the link is on, and the page it is linking to.

Let's say the "poker" link is from a general gambling site that covers many niches. The link is placed on a page that it's main keyword strength is bonuses.

That could be a decent enough link since poker is a gambling niche, and poker may have been mentioned a few times on the page, but...

If the page the link is on is about poker and the page the link points at is about poker then that is better.

The kind of backlinks that you yourself would achieve if you labored long and hard, doing one link at a time manually. The direct benefit of a high level of external incoming links from quality sites is fairly obvious; the more links pointing to your site from high traffic sites relevant to your niche, the more targeted traffic you'll see from these referrals.

    Social Networking Site

I agree with everything which has been said here. But still use facebook and twitter etc because they have a massive following and it only takes one big name to mention or notice your website and you could have thousands of new members.

One you may wanna try is friendfeed as well. I've been trying it out for a couple of months and again this has improved my travel rankings.

Do you actually own any gambling websites? If so, why not place one or two of them in your signature instead of the dating site you're presently advertising.

If you don't own any gambling websites, why are you posting on a gambling forum? You'll get much better link juice by posting in a forum that's related to your niche.

Also pedmills is spamming only sig links in various forums.

Those last two - pedmills and dating4u are both spammers.

    Can we axe them please

I think I reported pedmills the other day....

I'm not so sure about dating4u - his other post is actually quite helpful and explains why he's here.
