    Server Location Affect SEO?

    Quick & Simple Question.....

Does your servers location affect your SEO? Much or at all? Is it worth it to have your website servers located where your main traffic/audience is?

I am in the middle of a server mess right now. I am making changes & if I am going to change things I want to make the right decision.

    Any help is appreciated.

Whilst the signal to noise ratio in this thread isn't good, there is a bit of information hidden in there...

Short answer appears to be that yes it does have an influence.

Maybe - not sure. But what you should do is get several websites in different contries and link them together.

I have 2 sites hosted in the U.K and find that searches in Google come from all over, the main reason I hosted them there was mainly because of the U.S negativity in many states on online gambling.

From what I have read, your server location is very important. Google will use your server location to determine your geographical target audience. There is a way around this though. I know someone who has a website hosted in the UK, but has specified USA as their preferred location via the Google Webmaster Tools. It seems to have worked, his website has started coming up very well in the USA.

    >> specified USA as their preferred location via the Google Webmaster Tools

i noticed that feature/option recently as well.

    ----
You can only use this feature for sites with a neutral top-level domain, such as .com or .org. Country-specific domains, such as .ie or .fr, are already associated with a country or region. If you don't want your site associated with any location, select Unlisted.

    Yes it does affect because...

According to recent algorithm update Google takes care of he speed of site and the server location to the google server locations is directly related with the speed output. So USA based hosting services have more chance.

    Hi,

For Me Its not an issue, Google will work out what country your site is aimed at by looking at a range of factors including top level domain (.co.uk .fr etc) which sites are linking in to you, address of domain registar, on page content (listing your company address is a good idea). Just because your hosting is in germany for example, you will not be seen as a german site, google is a little smarter than that.

I don't think it has any effect, unless you plan to get a lot of backlinks from same IP hosted websites, then you might get penalized. Apart from that it doesn't matter.

FWIW server location matters HUGELY if you have multiple sites targeting the same keywords and you wish to 'game' google to get more SERP listings for one any single query.

Page load Speed is another one factor which depends on both server location and SERPs.

We changed to a host in our home country, which is also the target country and we saw some drastic rank improvements. However, whether this would of happened anyway, who knows, but I have been led to believe it will have done some good

the answer has already been stated but it helps mostly because it is faster and google says speed matters.
