Default Starting back linking profile on new site

    Hi -

I am starting a back linking profile for a new site. Someone told me that it is best initially to start by pointing all backlinks to your home page rather than individual pages that you might be pushing for specific keywords (e..g a blog post). Is this true?

Any helpful advice on getting going with backlinking is appreciated .

    Thanks,

    Hi Casionmark.

First of all, that's a very nice site. Is it a casino theme that you used? It looks great!

Personally, for new sites it might be a good strategy to write one or two very high quality pages and point your links there. It might be easier that way to start ranking for good keywords.

One note: go easy on the buttons. In your slots reviews you have like 4 or 5 buttons in the text, for me that is overkill. This has nothing to do with backlinking, but it might hurt you seo wise as some visitors will click your page away before reading it as a result of CTA overkill. And that will affect your average time on page by your visitors.

Make it natural... home page backlinking in theory is something that happens once you are known, initially people start to link to content than as your popularity grows then domain. I would start with a decent money page which also answers questions, or some basic guides and start fromt here

The reality is that if you were going to get an organic (unasked for) link it would naturally be to some content that someone thought was worth linking to. So that could be any page that has valuable content (or that would appeal to someone as valuable content).

As WonderPunter says, that would perhaps be unlikely to a home page of a site just starting out...unless it was on something (some subject) brand new or presented in a different/appealing way than seen before...and then the linker might be saying something like 'I found this new site called SlotBuzz that has great info on slots for players in the UK'.

In your case (and I mean no disrespect to the site or your efforts) it doesn't appear to be breaking new ground, so probably better I agree to let it age a bit and then get a couple of links, and focus meantime on building some great content pages and getting a few links to those.

One or two to home page early are most likely not going to hurt though, and may help....just think about what might happen naturally and in what circumstances.

Ok - thanks that does make sense. So tread carefully to start and build the profile slowly - and initially to some 'great content pages' before adding too many back links to the home page.

Out of interest would links to say a Skrill Payment Methods page give a boost to the whole site, or just that page?

In my experience (and it's not perfect experience + you never really know how Google view a link unless it's a high profile/value one) a link will give value to the page it's linked to + maybe other pages that that page also has links to...one of the reasons for internal linking other than for helping your visitors navigation.

But this is a simplistic assertion and I'd say the real answer is it depends on a number of variables (although others may have had other experiences).

You might want to consider...why on earth would anyone want to link to a mundane Skrill payments page ( or a number of other similarly tedious subjects)...whereas someone might want to link to a 'here's the greatest slot ever released and you won't read about it anywhere else' page

Ok, hadn't thought of it like that. Basically because I didn't think google would be so clever as to know that a Skrill page is boring!

So ideally I'd be back-linking to unique content. I assume this strategy would be less important as the site becomes more visible / is better indexed?

I don't think it's bad to start with a few links to your homepage, as long as you don't overdo it. One of the mistakes for me was that I pointed 100% of the links to the homepage, as I later dropped in rankings (Another mistake was overoptimizing anchor text). After a few links, you should distribute the links more naturally to different pages.

It's hard to give an exact answer in SEO ofcourse, but as long as you don't over optimize things and handle it naturally it should be OK. It's better to think what's better in long term

Making every link (or lots of links) the same, example something like 'new slot sites'

So if that was your target term, and Google saw 50 inbound links to your page all with the same anchor, they'd know that wasn't natural right? (debatable on how quickly it'd be pulled up, but would be eventually)

So you make sure it's mixed up a bit.....'new slots sites' 'latest slot releases' 'here's a new slot released by xxxxx' etc etc
