Default Survey: Gambling participation in Sweden down 10% in last five years

The percentage of Sweden’s population that gambles has fallen by 10% over the past five years, according to a survey conducted by gambling regulator Spelinspektionen, with 66% of the 1,582 people polled claimed to have gambled at least once in the past year.

While this number was unchanged from the 2017 results, it was down 10% from the 76% participation rate revealed by the 2013 edition of the survey. The majority (55%) of players gambled at least once a month, down from 61% in 2013, though up two percentage points from the 2017 survey. Weekly participation rates fell to 34%, with this group primarily male, and aged between 50 to 64 years old.

    Other key findings included:

    • A third of Swedish people have stopped gambling because they never won any money while another 22% have completely lost their trust in the gambling market.
    • Horse racing, bingo and lotteries generated more interest than online casino games, while 57% of respondents said they went for land-based lottery activity, while only 17% pursued online betting.
    • Bingo has three times more players in bingo halls than online bingo websites.
    • More than 60% of Swedish gamblers bet with Svenska Spel, the state’s gambling company, with bet365 being the most used international brand with just over 3% of the market. Unibet was next with a 2% stake while other brands such as PokerStars, LeoVegas, and Cherry, each got 1 percent of the share.
    • Only 3% of Swedes say that they gambled more than they should have in 2018, with 7% saying they knew someone who gambled too much.
    • Sports bettors preferred to place wagers online (16%) rather than at retail shops (5%).
As most of you are well aware, the country opened a newly regulated online gambling market on 1 January.

Only 10% down in the last 5 years is no big loss. Considering also that this is only for Sweden.

I think it will only stay around 10%. Maybe a little higher than that at the most.

1582 people polled is too small of a sample size to take this seriously. Can't see that many people being the voice for 10 million people of the country.

What a finger in the face of those who think gambling is like heroin and is going to end your life. People are not stupid, they know when to stop. Only three percent had some problems.

Can't say much about the validity of research itself cuz it's in Swedish, but 1500 people is about what you need for good data. With the population of 10 mio, you only need 1100 people to be able to have a 3% error probability.
