    Is there really any need?

Jeremy Hunt's (the Culture Secretary) plans to keep offshore based operators from advertising in the UK seem to be about to be legalised. In the next coming days it is expected to become statutory that only operators who locate their servers in Britain can be licensed by the Gambling Commission - effectively abandoning the "White List" system, which recognised licenses granted by certain jurisdictions as if issued by the UK.

Tory MP Matthew Hancock, for one, demanded all gambling companies operate from within the UK, but that is less likely to happen. Instead, the Gambling Commission will have to slowly replace the white list while still respecting legitimate jurisdictions and operators.

Not the best news we could have hoped for . . . what's your opinion on it? Do you agree to this shift towards the French and Italian gambling law models or should the Government just leave well alone?

Hunt's new legislation by prohibiting foreign based operators to advertise in the UK is bad news to say the least. The way I see it is that the British government is doing this for two reasons; to gain additional tax and to regulate its internet gambling market more. It's (UK government) also beginning to impose hard ball tactics "my way or the highway". My honest opinion, I think it's a bit harsh and a "free market" for all is dwindling fast.

Well, the way I see it, at least the UK govt actually taxes it, regulates it and allows their citizens to play online. It certainly is better than the USA gov't stance on banning everyone, not taxing and regulating it and then crying about not raising enough revenue so let's "tax the rich" some more.

Meanwhile, new indian casinos get put up every bleepin' year and nobody ever says a word about gambling be "bad" for society when those state politicians are getting their campaigns funded by those casinos to keep any competition out. It's a farce like everything else in US politics.
