If someone chooses a role model simply based on how well a person can hit a stationary ball with a stick ...
Well ... then Tiger Woods is still a good role model ...

Personally I like to look for a little more in role models than simple stick swinging ability ...

A role model ? A man that cheats and lies to his wife is no role model by any means.

I used to always say that there are two kinds of people I have no use for. That's liars and thieves. In my opinion, any man that will lie to you, will also steal from you.

I think he will always be remembered as an Icon of the golf world, but as for a role model, not so much.

Gooner said it - just because a man can hit a ball with a stick he is a role model?

If you wanna hit balls with sticks too, yes, try to do it the way he does.

But who ever said that means he is perfect in any other way?

This is the nation that almost impeached a president because he got a blow job.

People totally confuse morality with skill.

It's like apples and oranges though, one in no way means the other is also present.

I think there is something wrong with a society that can't tell morality from skill. People shouldn't be elevated to god-like positions just because they have a skill or a talent. We don't know any of these people, we just see their talent. For all we know any of them can be total scum otherwise.

I agree - in no way am I saying that I condone his behaviour - but at the same time I dont think he is the very first celebrity to cheat his wife.

In terms of role model and sponsorship, give it maybe a year and a good golf season, and most companies will be happy to have him back.

Remember Beckham and his affair? yet he is still, to this day, the loved golden balls. Ultimately I have never thought of Tiger as a role model (I dont play gold for one) but I think the media has a short memory and as long as he keeps being good at what he does, people will be happy to forgive him.

On the other hand if I was his wife, forgiving would NOT be an option. But that's between him and his wife.

On the other hand what idiot cheats on his super model blonde Swedish partner??? I mean for that alone he needs to be ousted as an idiot! lol...

It's bad enough to cheat on your spouse while she's at home taking care of your own family, but to do with with such...unscrupulous women (and then go home to your family) is just unimaginable to me. But I couldn't care less if he is considered a cultural icon one way or the other.

On a different note, this has all made me wonder about something else in the back of my mind. If a guy like Tiger, with a clean cut image, was getting all this action on the side while married, imagine the kind of action other low key *single* sports guys are getting. You know, guy's like Peyton Manning and Sidney Crosby.

A celebrity should never be a role model for being a celebrity - they should be a role model for what they do well. Having the skill to play golf the way Tiger does is why he should be considered a "role model" - to aspiring golfers.

Personally I don't think many people look to celebrities as role models anyway - I think it's just what the press would like us to believe. Can anyone here honestly say that have a celebrity role model? Someone whose lifestyle and ideals they base their own on?

Celebrity isn't a qualification or achievement. You're just called a celebrity because a lot of people have heard of you. Wow.

A lot of people, Tiger included, probably don't even care about being a celebrity. They just wanna do what they do well. Everyone's done something wrong, or something they regret, at some stage in their life and they deal with it in their own way.

Bottom line is that I think Tiger still is and always will be a role model to aspiring golfers, but if anyone had him as a role model for anything else before this happened then they're a bit f*cked up anyway IMO

    Good points.

Personally, what he did to his wife and family is disgusting, but that is really between him and them.

If I ever run into him in town or at a restaurant or whatever, I would still shake his hand and could look him in the eye and tell him I always admired the way he played golf.... I honestly do not care very much for golf but I occassionally would watch a few minutes of it when changing tv channels if I happened to land on a channel and saw him playing because he truly is gifted in that aspect.

Beyond that, if he bought me a drink and wanted to talk for 5 minutes, I would tell him to fire his publicist and would tell him he didn't get out in front of this mess when the sh** first hit the fan, but I doubt this is anything hundreds of others haven't told him and he likely already knows this.

Role model....nah....but like someone else said, for a golfer...then yes.

I just relized I can't really answer the poll because I think icon and role model are 2 different things.

Yes, he is and will be known for being a golfing icon.

But the role model part, I would say no to.

icon - definately. The best golfer to walk the planet to date will be a sporting icon regardless of his off-course antics.

roll model - not for most who believe in marriage and family, but possibly for those who love the game of golf.

these are 2 very different things. It's a shame sports people keep on being lumped with the tag 'role model'. They are very good at certain things...hitting a ball with a stick, or kicking a ball, running fast or whatever. Not necessarily (and very rarely) blessed with an overabundance of wisdom.

I hope that you are jesting with this question. The guy is finished as both a player, endorser, family man, and a person. He is a psychopath of sorts, and his self-proclaimed invincibility has surely caught up to him. I hope he invested well.
