Default What percentage of non-reciprocating links do you tolerate on your site?

We all know that reciprocating links are highly seo-relevant. However, it is also considered to be useful to have some nonreciprocating links, especially from educational or governmental sites which may not reciprocate with a gambling site. Do you control the so-called Reciprocal Link Ratio, the ratio of reciprocating links to total active links?

I gave a vote (10%) but I must admit I dont think of it like this. I dont consider a percentage - and certainly not as "tolerating."

I am working towards making sure all pages where it is appropriate, I link out to a quality site or two. Quality can mean high PR - it can mean a page that has value to my visitors... or both. I find news services and such make great links... They aren't direct competitors and usually have decent PR (or are understood to be quality domains).

I have voted the 10 % but I must admit I dont think of it like this ( = matted ).

I don't give link in free way, it is very rare if I give one free link. I sell links.

I accept only links that are close with the content of website infact I don't wish much links about poker on onlinexcasinos.
( I tollerate to max 5/7 links in homepage on about 70 links )

I tend to think differently as well and don't assign a 'tolerance' percentage.

What I try to do, as well as a few reciprocals which I have cut back on, is to link out to trustworthy sites that I feel will provide useful information for my visitors.

I believe that having a good quantity of outward links to quality sites helps my SEO efforts as much as reciprocal links, even from the same site. The web is just a collection of links and if I link to quality sites, who I presume do the same, it should provide the search engines a natural linkage of quality sites that they will trust.

Of course, this is really just a utopian dream of mine but I'm sticking with it!!

I've voted 30% but really have never measured the number of non-reciprocated outward links from my site so it's a bit of a guess. Maybe I should have voted, "I don't care" but thought an estimated percentage would be more beneficial for the poll.

I responded "I don't care" since that is the general philosophy that I follow. Almost always when we link out we are doing so because we have made a decision that we want to, and the decision is not related to whether there is an inbound link. The decision is related either to establishing cordial relationships or to helping visitors on our sites.

For example, it the case of the GPWA we provide links to top participants each month on the GPWA home page as a way of saying thank you. Doing something to say thanks to others when you mean it is just part of having a cordial relationship and not something that should have any strings attached. To be honest, the thought of attaching any strings never crossed my mind. In fact, the very idea of thinking that way in that particular context feels completely obnoxious to me.

For another example on the GPWA site, in our member directory we have direct links from each member's page to the member's portal sites. In that case we are primarily trying to help user's of the directory get to member sites. Again, link exchanges were not on our mind. Our focus was on being helpful to site visitors. We also wanted to provide links to member sites hoping that would be good for our members in terms of Google rankings. However, I doubt that doing so has any significant negative effect on the ranking of the GPWA site. My personal guess is the outbound links probably help establish the GPWA site as an authority site which would help both the GPWA and our members.

I actually voted 30%....and like most have said, I don't think of it in terms of percentages either.

I do perform straight link exchanges, and also 3 way exchanges. At times, when I am trying to get incoming links for certain sites or pages I will give 2 for ones links with a round robing type of exchange. (EX: I'll give a link from each of two sites to yours if you give me one to a third site)

And sometimes I just link to a site because of the value to the visitor. I even do this with other portals. Sometimes I might feel that another portal has a really good page that is pertinent to the content on a page I have created and I will link to it no questions asked or recip requested.

I actually fully believe that linking to other sites or pages helps boost your own pages rank if it is considered in line with your own content.

Like a few others here, I have also linked to people on occassion, just to try and help them get into the serps and to help get the spiders crawling their sites.

I have a couple of non reciprocating links but havent added links for months. I am concentrating 100% on content and I am only linking to sites now which I truly think are great.

I voted that ' I dont care"

I link to sites I like, sites that are a better resource than I am or could ever be (due to what could be a staff of what 50 people lol)

For example an affiliate who I will now call a friend gives me more advice than i could ever ask for, and has made such an impact on how far I have come. I link to him..I dont ask for one back and my next site which shouldbe ready to go next week will also have a link to him. Its not just the advice that he gives and Ia m doing this in return...his sites and what he does is freaking amazing. He is honest, he doesnt try a pull the door to door salesman approach on his vistors he is straight with them and talks to them like they are people and not just a number. He follows the guidelines in the serps and keeps it again honest...no tricks. These are sites that I like.

People who do amazing jobs at running thier sites should be linked to. Your visitors will appreciate it.

I also think its good to have a balance of outgoing one way links, besides that wouldnt you like to know people are linking to you because they think you've done a great job!

I agree. But if you had e.g. 70% one way link to sites you like and 30% reciprocal links, how would that affect the ranking? That's the question.
