When do you use Social Media?

After briefly discussing the issue of when people refer to their Twitter account, peruse Facebook, check out the latest article on Digg, or whatever form of social media they may be interested in, I thought I would ask everyone for their opinion.

Personally, I find it most efficient to be consistently referring to various forms of social media so that I remain connected and up-to-date with pertinent information that I have tweaked to filter into my mobile or inbox.

However this does not seem to be the case with others.

So when do you use social media?

I'm on them a few times a day, but mostly outside the office since we don't really have access in the office thanks to the people who abused it.. accessing facebook in the office is considered a sackworthy thing these days.

I'm sure most workplaces are the same.. unless of course you're one of those lucky affiliates who gets to work from home and are their own boss!

Seriously though, I'm on twitter at least once per day and facebook probably about 10-20 times a day.

My dad calls me a social butterfly. I can't help it. I just have to be talking or socialising in some way. Maybe that's why I'm around here so often

My vote was "every few hours", but those hours tend to be mornings/evenings/weekends, when I catch up with friends on facebook. During work hours I am on twitter at least a couple of times a day.

I use it whenever I have a new article that I published. Could not vote as some days it is many times a day while other times it is a few times a week.

What would you consider your primary use of Social Media to be? More a promotional tool than an educational source?

I'm one of the 79% of twitter members who have an account but have never once tweeted.......

    http://mashable.com/2010/03/10/twitter-follow-stats/

Facebook, on the other hand, I check at least 2-3 times a day and use it to stay in touch with friends and family.

    Twitter Slacking

I'm one of the 79% of twitter members who have an account but have never once tweeted.......
Though I have actually Tweeted, I never keep up with it for very long.. I'll get one good idea a month for tweets, if that. Though I do follow some interesting people who always offer good reading material, so I check my account once or twice a week.

On a more business orientated level I am starting to see the value in using Twitter to keep your clients "in the know" and share information with them in a more mass but casual manner. As well as keep an eye on what they find interesting.

I am also slowly trying to break my Facebook addiction... leaving university and no longer using it to avoid writing papers/studying has been a big help

I have to say the main reason I don't keep up with twitter is because noone replies to the tweets that I address to them.. not sure if it's just me or what.. but I find it frustrating..

    Interesting tidbit from emarketer.com:

"Twitter usage exploded in 2009. US site traffic grew from a few million unique monthly visitors in early 2009 to over 20 million by June."

50% of that is Demi and Ashton.

Seriously though, I am on my personal FB a few times a week. Sometimes more than once per day.

I use FB to upload pics of (yes) my 3 sons and their sporting events etc. We don't have any family in Vegas so it's a great way to keep in touch with family and let them see the boys as they grow.

Both Twitter and Facebook have great uses as business tools as well if utilized properly.

It's funny because when I originally thought of this poll, I had been reading about how effective it is to Tweet something or post something business-related on Facebook over the weekend.

According to several users, they preferred to be in a comfortable setting when referring to any social media (beit business or personal use). As such, they made sure to Tweet, Facebook or blog on a Friday and Saturday so that it would remain fresh for the weekend - where they expected the most viewers to see it.

This does not seem to be the consensus here. I guess it shows how spread out everyone's social media use is.

During a busy life of work, never really have the time to look on facebook (which is all i really use), and that's to keep in touch with old friends, that and nothing more.
