    Default When Logged into Wordpress?

On my one Word Press website, when I am logged in I do not get the options at the top of the page to edit a page, create a page, or even go to the dashboard. I guess it is almost like the toolbar at the top of page that has disappeared. Because of this when I want to edit a page I have to type in "wp-admin" to the end of the url to get to the dashboard and then go to All Pages and find the page I want and edit it that way.

My site is pretty big so it is really inconvenient to do it this way. I spend less time on this website because of this since it is so cumbersome and a pain to edit any pages and/or posts.

Has this happened to anyone else in the past and does anyone know how to fix this to get the what I am calling the "Word Press toolbar" to appear back at the top of the page?

    Thanks for any help,

    Travis

I don't know if this is a solution, but in your wp profile you can check the box for the admin bar. Maybe that would sort it?

Sometimes it helps to just reload the page after you logged in.

Do you use Cloudflare? I guess it is related with caching. I have similar problem on one of my websites too(I don't know what is the exact issue, but on my other websites cloudflare doesn't create such problems for me). When logged in try to clear all caches and the browser too, I think the issue will be resolved.

It happens to me too when I initially log in, but as soon as I refresh the page the toolbar shows up. It has only started to happen though the last couple of weeks.

It really is frustrating. I do not use cloudflare and refreshing the page and clearing the cache doesn't work either. I have even tried using an incognito window and it still doesn't work so I do not think it is a caching issue. I hate to reinstall WP because I have done a lot of css changes to get it to look the way I want it.

If anyone has any other ideas please let me know. I may try to find a WP forum and ask there as well. If I find anything out I will re-post here as well.

    side note,
When editing css to your theme, save the new parts (possibly with comments) in a text file, either locally or in the web folder in case you ever need to redo the edits again.

Also, saving copy's of your css outside the web folder, you can easily overwrite and changes a reinstall of wp or the theme would make.

This is good advice and I actually do this. I didnt use to until I learned the hard way. I generally always a save an original and then also make another copy before making any major changes.

Thanks for this. I did narrow it down to a theme problem because when I use a different theme the toolbar appears. I just need to keep trying a few things mentioned in that article and I am sure I will figure it out.....

Are your plugins, themes and WP Core Files updated automatically?

It could be that your current theme, has an issue with one of your updated plugins. BUT the theme you used to test, didn't.

NB - Wordpress core updated to V5.0 yesterday (lots of new stuff in that update). Maybe that's the issue too. You theme isn't compatible with WP V5.0

My suggestion...turn off all your plugins, see if that returns your top-of-page toolbar. If it does, then activate each plugin (1 by 1) and re-test after activating each plugin. Following this process until the offending plugin breaks the top-page-toolbar, then you'll know that's causing the issue.

NB - Issues like these, is why you need to ensure you take daily backups of your files, and database. Doing so, will allow you to revert to a previous plugin. Usually if there is an issue with a plugin, other webmasters have the same issue, and the plugin developer will release an updated patch

maybe your website using outdated wordpress version , in this situation just updraft backup plugin , and download your content backup on your pc, including all pages , posts, and images , then backup the database file from phpmyadmin .. after backed up all data , complete delete the site and install a fresh version of wordpress then restore the site backup on newly installed site , that"s all .

note" you may hire someone if you don;t wanna doing that by yourself, it may cost 20$ to 50$ .

One should never, ever, directly edit the theme's css file(s), or for that matter any file within the theme. Instead, that's what a CHILD theme is for. I've added the following excerpt text from this site, where, you can easily learn how to add a "child" theme.

    https://optimizerwp.com/wordpress-child-theme/

Using WordPress child theme to customize your WordPress theme is the safest route possible. Because your customization will be saved in a different folder and it won’t get lost when you update the parent theme.

Child theme is the mirror reflection of a theme. Whatever changes you make to the reflection will not affect the original or parent theme. But if the parent theme makes any changes it will be visible in your child theme.

A child theme is one way to handle it, but child themes at times have trouble over riding parent theme elements, and as long as you have good backups (and notes of changes) there should be fewer problems making edits, and if an edit does cause an issue, the backup should always allow for easy recovery.

By all means have backups of core files, theme(s) and database.

But a child theme is the correct way to handle CSS changes, and any other mods to theme files. I've been using WP since V2.6 (that's 10 years), and the only time anyone would have issues with a "child theme", is when it's not setup correctly to begin with.

I agree, child themes are the better and most efficient way of modifying a theme, especially if you have a heap of modifications.
