888poker withdraws from Australia

Following the lead of Vera&John, 888Poker has become the latest online gaming operator to confirm its exit from the regulated Australian market. The company will cease operations in the country on January 16 and has advised customers to deregister from tournaments that start from and after this date.

The move comes after the introduction of the Interactive Gambling Amendment Bill 2016, an amendment to the Interactive Gambling Act 2001, that will require online gaming brands to secure local licences or face fines. Operators that take bets from punters in the country without a local licence will be deemed to have broken the law, with individuals to face fines of up to A$1.35 million (€950,200/US$1 million) per day, while companies could be charged as much as A$6.75 million.
