Hreflang links must be reciprocal to count as valid for Google.

With other words, if the original site doesn't link on the copied one, then the Google doesn't connect the two sites. Even if the copied one links to the original, it is not enough. The copied site will simply count as a copied site.

However, it takes time for Google to recognize copied content. So, for some time, temporarily it can happen that a copy is at better positions on search results. I know, that can be painful too, but I wouldn't worry about this too much.

    Hi Kazak.

Can you show us an example where the copied site has actually REPLACED the real site? There is ample evidence of mass copying but to investigate this further we need an example.

    Do you know of one?

    Thanks

I keep asking for this on AGD... I have yet to see any example that lasted even 24 hours, and even then, I have only seen one example.

Worryingly that does seem to be the case: https://snipboard.io/KkXG2E.jpg

Although I don't see any hreflang links on the currently ranking site?

Yeah now I am really confused because Ahrefs / Semrush show that australian-casino.org never had any rankings in the first place. Or have you made a typo in the domain name?

hxxp://casino-892_club has a whole load of 17 in traffic going for it. Must have stole less than the hosting is worth from the other site. Or am I missing something?

I could check the pages without a VPN, not from Australia. It is an interesting phenomenon, indeed. I have seen similar before when someone else's site was copied. That copy page disappeared from Google search results after a few weeks.

The purpose of this fake site example in the former comments is unclear for me. I would expect that after clicking on casinos on the fake site I am redirected to a casino, through a third-party referral link, but instead of that, I get to a "Disabled" page. This might happen because of not using VPN, but if it is not the reason, that means no one earns money directly with the fake site. If no one earns on it, then the purpose of it can purely be to remove the original site from Google search results. In this case, the perpetrator might be one of the competitors of the original site, or a former, angry employee.

If the casino referral links would work, then the original site owner could notify the casinos to find out who the referral links belong to and ask the casinos to ban the criminals. In the current case, I can see, that the original site is registered at DMCA. I don't understand why the DMCA doesn't immediately catch the fake site and remove it? Another question, if the DMCA doesn't do it automatically alone, why someone at the original site didn't notice the drop for the keywords and file a removal request through DMCA?

I have never tried, don't know how it works, but there is also a Google tool to ask for the removal of third-party content, anyone can search it typing: Remove Outdated Content Tool.

I don't see any connection with hreflang tags, as it was written at the starter post, still, it is a strange phenomenon. I believe the fake site will disappear in a few weeks.

These fake site occurrences show two things to me. The first one is possible negligence from the original site owners. The second one is the imperfection of the Google algorithm when we talk about copied content recognition process.

Very clever of them to attach casino affiliates. Most of the affiliate sites are ranking with blackhat, thus writing to Google is dangerous. Even if Google looks at this issue, it might remove some/most of affiliate sites as well.
When this issue will spill-over to other niches and major players got hit, it should be resolved.
