Default Affiliate links: follow or no-follow?

    Hi everybody,

Many webmasters among us undoubtedly have website pages with many affiliate links. Think of a page full of bookmaker bonuses etc.

Do you always refer to these links as "no-follow" or "follow"? And why do you take that decision?

    Thank you for the insights!

no follow. Adding a lot of "do follow" links will send your sites spiraling down in the serps. At least that was my experience.

Without a doubt, always make your links "no-follow" links.

Here's more information for you about them here:

nofollow is a must and I would also advise target="_blank"

Yes, definitely "nofollow". Also use target="_blank" to ensure the link opens in a new window.

The only downside to this of course is that some ad blockers will refuse to open a certain few gambling links in new windows. They will simply shut said window. Be sure to test this yourself on your links or you might end up with a nasty surprise.

From an SEO point of view it should be "no follow". Google won't penalize you but can hurt sites receiving links, but not always, but could hurt your site.

This chrome extension highlights no follow links, if you look at the best ranking sites, they almost always nofollow their tracking links.

if anyone uses `target="_blank"` make sure to add `rel="noopener"` as opening an external page in a new tab may be a security issue and affect your website performance. if you have nofollow as well, it would be like this: `rel="nofollow noopener"`
