The psychological requirements -if you work as affiliate manager and affiliate at the same time- to be wooed by money greed is the crux of the matter.
Even if big majority of all affiliate manager and other employees are really honest persons ... there is still a small group of good-for-nothing who have a devastating impact on this industry.

The starting words from @cass 4 years ago ...

"How many affiliate managers do you know of that have their own casino portals? I feel this is a conflict of interest; since this gives them an "edge" over us normal portal owners."

... were foresighted because 4 years later ...

"Just to give an example; a mechanic who works for a large mechanical repair shop/garage is not allowed to do any mechanical repairs as a sideline job to supplement his income; since it contradicts his contractual obligations toward his employer."

... many cases shows, that this wisdom changed from conflict of interest slowly but surely to a moral conflict and sometimes to a conflict with law.

In the meantime ... love, peace and harmony have become the exception. The hewing and stabbing for the players ... for the cake, which is obviously not big enough for some people, has begun.

Also the motivation of some employees to operate their own affiliate website as a 2nd income, changed.

It is a pity, but that is the way it is.

I knew / know of one affiliate manager who had / has his own portal. The moment I found out, I left. This is a good while back though..

But, in all fairness: As soon as I am 'competing' with my own affiliate manager, my way of dealing would be him, or me. No room for both of us, with data being shared on an unfair way. (Aff managers have more insight / background info I would reckon) And, if it has to be me, then so be it, but not without an email to management about it. An affiliate manager should in my opinion not run a portal. Since money is involved, there is no one I would trust enough for him or her to be my partner, as well as my competition. It is just how it is.

Money unfortunately makes people go nuts.

Good that this thread is here: Affiliate managers should not run their own portals.

Even the affiliate manager who doesn't run his own portal right now, still has the potential to leave the company and set up on his own as an affiliate at a later date.

So I would just say let that inform your dealings with everybody in this industry, because people will stab each other in the back for monetary gains. Envy and greed rule this world, so if anybody would like to come and live in a treehouse with me, just let me know

    Exactly Racingjim.

If there is a way how affiliate manager can see your cards and you think there can be advantage he can take from them (it is definitely not my case), then you have just 2 options:
    - do a steps that he will not see it so clearly and restrict communication
    - live with that

Internet is different than offline reality, where btw. cheating is common as well. Many things that are immoral simply happen and will happen. There will be many very long battles between old and new world (intellectual property; cryptocurrency; online selling of pharma, drugs, forbidden sex, guns, 3d printers; labor law etc.) and in the end the old world will lose.

Non-compete clause in purely online jobs is dead. It is simply not enforceable. I see how many employees seel my data and that is much more blatant case. It is better to do countermeasures than crying over spilled milk. There are few managers I trust, because I see how hard they work for the company; e.g. Richard from SIA. But even by the mest ones I am sure their loyalty and consistency will exist only until their emplyer will treat them well. And that depends on business plan that can be rogue, less rogue or nonrogue and it can change anytime as shareholders and management wish.

Really good affiliate manager should understand this btw. and behave accordingly when he revealsthe countersteps that careful affiliate makes not to steal from the casino, but to protect his know how.

How much do affiliate managers get paid? Are they mostly salaried positions or are we all basically sub affiliates of the AM, such that they are getting 2-5% of our revenues in compensation?

Most affiliate Managers I know are paid salary although they may get a bonus for new affiliates they sign up.Definitely don't think they are getting % of our revenue. For me I would never work with a manager who is also running their own affiliate sites.Double chance that my SEO and my players will get stolen IMO.

An affiliate manager... on salary? How depressing is that job? Seeing and advising all these people on how to do their jobs better, meanwhile your successful affiliates are making 10x+ what you make off of your own product!

    Ugh.

Those arguing that AM's shouldn't have their own sites are short sighted in my own opinion.

Having an affiliate manager who also knows what it is like to be an affiliate is gold dust - if that affiliate manager has in any way been successful in their endeavour.

There is no substitute for experience and knowing what works, so having an AM that knows exactly what it takes to get conversions and retain players is something that you just can't buy. It's like having a personal mentor who can show you exactly how to get conversions.

However what an AM can't do is make you do the work. It is one thing to say your work can easily be copied, but quite another to put in the time and effort to write new content and gain links. What makes affiliates successful is their determination to work a lot of hours and learn stuff that goes beyond basic site building skills - because that is what it takes.

Affiliate managers who don't have their own sites have great skills in other areas like customer relationship management and time management which maybe the ordinary affiliate doesn't possess, we all know who they are because they spend the time to work with you and develop your site.

Finding an affiliate manager who also runs a successful portal is like looking for a needle in a haystack. Those who run successful affiliate sites have no need to become an affiliate manager and those that do may not have the required people skills to be good at it anyway. Over the years I've spoken to many affiliate managers who wanted to build an affiliate site and not one has made a go of it to my knowledge.

Being able to get quality advice from an AM that has seen both sides of the story is in my opinion advice that is worth paying good money for and I wish more networks would take on people who have been affiliates before because they understand how damn hard we work for each player acquisition.

If you try to exclude affiliate managers from owning portals then you deny the transfer of knowledge that goes with it.

10% of £1,000 is far more preferable than 100% of nothing and for all those feeling in the dark for their first conversions knowing that you are doing things right or are at least along the right lines will keep you going when most others give up.

Having an Affiliate Manager giving you a bum steer because they don't really know their stuff can kill your business.

I can't think of a better friend than an affiliate manager who really and truly knows their stuff.

Thanks for rubbing that in! Haha
And 10x is really an understatement.

I suppose that separates the ones who love their job over anything to the ones who just want to make money.
The ones who love their job wont care that affiliates are making 10x their salary.

    Not really.
Even if we are on salary and your numbers don't make a difference to what we take home, we still have numbers to reach and if you guys are being penalised that is bad news for us too. And for those of us who do actually love our jobs, it's also nice to see affiliates doing well. We know you guys for years and in a way have a better relationship with you than some of our real life friends, so we always hope that you will do well.

Is this mean that Internet is like wild west in America, two-three hundreds years before?
If affiliate manager move players (especially from small affiliates that are not aware of the issue) to his affiliate account is right?
Then, I would like to become affiliate manager and retain my affiliate sites, as well.
It could be great to earn from the both ends.

This is not necessarily true - there's at least one company that comes to mind that had a rogue AM who closed player accounts and reopened them under his own tracker.

I stand corrected. But that's an exception since in this case the AM was stealing not only from affiliates but from his employers as well.

And this is why the companies probably shouldn't give their affiliate managers so much control. Just sayin.
