    I keep it simple.
Clear CTA´s open in same window/tab.
Pics or screenshots or other "unexpected" redirections open target _blank.
All links to Netrefer Casinos open in same window/tab.

I use the same window - always.
Experience users and always choose open in new tab if they want.

Many users know how to open a link in a new tab.

Many users don't know if it is best to open a link in a new tab.

    FOR ANDROID :
Hold your finger on a link - it will then give you a menu with an option to open in new window.

    FOR I-TOY :
No idea as I've never had one - but they'll have a similar method.

Same process for iPhone, press and hold the link for a menu of options including open in a new window.

the only problem is when using an adblocker. Adblocker stops new tabs, so opening the page in the same window is one way around it. I do wonder if it is better this way or not, i don't really know how many people use adblocker, but i do not want to miss out on potential earnings.

Here is a quora discussion post by a guy who was CEO of a product to try and minimise Ad Blocking - so he's in the know with some good numbers.

The raw numbers range - averaging 9% - but as high as 50% on some sites.
The more technical the user group, the higher the use of ad blockers.

Take a look at the source link below - they've picked out some interesting snippets -
eg. Linux averages 29% blocking (again backing up techies hate ads).

Thats my personal opinion anyhow. Although, if I'm on a good site I always open external links in new tabs manually myself.
    ^^

    This.

I've always used the scroll button to open a link in a new tab, just so it can be closed easily with CTRL + W key. I've set my firefox preferences to keep my existing tab in focus.

Unfortunately, not everyone has the same preference. On a phone, it's annoying and fiddly to manage tabs and can be a massive memory killers when there's big/flashy websites open in tabs that you've forgotten to close.

I think that affiliate links should open in a new window.

I always use target blank - if they visit the site and it's not for them many people will close the tab - if this wasn't target blank they have just left your website, if it is then they fall back on your website and you get another chance.

    I don't do a new window - I do a new tab.

It's a quandry. Best thing is new tab / window. But adblockers are a major problem, so maybe open in same window and put up with the downside of people possibly leaving your site quicker in return for getting some sign-ups you would have missed from people with adblockers. I'd side with same window, but it certainly aint ideal.

I have read a few people saying that visitors will just manually open a new tab. I don't buy that. How many people new to the internet have a clue about that? Zero. And that is the target market for affiliate marketing, people joining bookies for the first time. I know loads of people with brains who have been online for years who have never manually opened a new tab. It doesn't happen, it's just wishful thinking. When people on this thread say they do it then it just reinforces the point. You need to know your stuff to be doing that. You guys are "experts". Even then we have detailed discussion here instructing webmasters how it can be done on a mobile - and you think normal people open a new tab / window manually?! Not gonna happen.

You're mixing apples with oranges here ... experts in websites is a narrow skill set.

We might be experts in building websites and marketing - but we are NOT experts in mobile phone use.

However, any teenager / twenty-something with a mobile phone knows far more about their own device and how to use it and get new windows than an a 30+ year old webmaster that uses PCs as their main device.

    -----------------

Regarding new window / same window I am pretty much in in the same window camp.

For PCs - I think ad blocker is a big problem - somewhere between 10-50% - so I use same window (but I notice a lot of new window opens in my logs). For mobiles - I prefer same window as a user (less confusing to me) but again I notice a lot of mobile users opening new windows and clicking on multiple links.

It seems to me people can - and do - choose to use new tabs/windows and the ad blocker allows this.
However if you force a new window then ad blocker stops it - classing it as a pop-up.

Given that - I choose same window always.

I agree with both sides to a certain extent, with ad blocker it seems that our hands are a little tied and if same window opening is the only fail safe solution, then there aren't many other options.

Gooner it's reassuring that you notice quite a few users opt to open in a new window anyway. Altho would you consider your typical reader to be the more technical minded football bettor?

I just think that the right click / open in a new window shortcut is something that would not be readily used by the less technical people. None of us know for sure as we ourselves are either one or the other, but it does helps that you have some data to back up your thinking.

Yes, I don't think anyone manually opens in new window except techies and webmasters on this forum. How do they even know to do it the first time they click or do they check the source code to see if there is _blank?! But I think you have hit the nail on the head, left with no choice but to use same window. I see Google News opens in new window though, I assume adblockers would interrupt that.
