This topic came up recently in conversation - with article submission, how many sites should each article be submitted to? Or is it better to have unique articles (or variations of) for each site?

Agreed. I would never buy those spun articles. Each article should be a completely different article.
Its more costly - but way better!!
I also agree with the both comments made already.
Submitting a unique article to each site is a lot more time consuming and expensive (if you buy your articles) but is likely to yield higher quality results.
Also bare in mind that a percentage of article submission webmasters (at least those who are savvy) won't accept articles to their directories if they appear anywhere else, therefore you are loosing out on potential links which hold more quality.
Cheers,
Dave
Unique articles are best, but clearly time consuming
You can write an article and the 'spin' sections of it, words and phrases within those sections etc. Change the titles and hey presto a new article.
The balance is making sure it still makes sense and is different enough from the original
time consuming expensive but google loves it so be unique with your content just like in life

Sorry to hijack the thread, but this is kind of on topic: does anyone have any suggestions for good article submission websites? I've seen a thread here with a long list of sites, but I would like if someone would be kind enough to narrow down about 5 or so good ones. Thanks

Yes these three are really good ones. I have done some work on Ezines. I have a writer who writes for me several dozens of articles. I am hoping he will get into Article base and goarticles too. Every article is unique and written to match the page its linked to.
It is very costly but still very decent and not spun material. I think spun material is just a lazy out and usually makes the article look irrelevant.
I also bought a good domain name recently - it will be Gambling related. And will allow users to submit anything gambling related. I am in the process to hire an editor, and make sure all the material is of good quality. Not all submissions will be excepted.
I will post the service when its ready!![]()
Are Press releases are doc'ced for duplicate content?

The problem with that is you will have DUPLICATE articles posted in numerous places, but I have already seen that you post copied content on forums now so it's no surprise.

When posting articles, it is important to post on your own site first like we do on our online bingo sites. That way you get the credit for the article from the search engines. The sites with the duplicate content do not. Many people think duplicate content hurts you, but it really doesn't hurt, it just doesn't help.
Quality results can be done easily, although it does requires time and effort as well. As with good quality article sites, i must agree with Smoking that articlebase.com, ezinearticles and goarticles.com is a good source of quality links, as i used them as part of my submission. You may also want to submit to those sites with fast approval, for a more fast result.
Here is a list of the top 50 article directories: vretoolbar dot com/articles/directories.php (sorry can't post links yet), ordered by traffic and pagerank. I am not sure about the value of the number 1 (Google Knol)..testing it at the moment, will let you know about results later.

Much better if you will submit one article per site. Make sure that your article has unique content. Some of the article submission sites accept many articles but if you do it everytime you will consider as spammer.
