Free hosts are very limited and I would not recommend many of them.

Page.ly specialise in Wordpress hosting and support. I've used them quite a bit and can recommend them.
    Another option is WestHost.

    Hi,

which of these hosts allow enough PHP memory (128 and up) to run Wordpress with many plugins without problems?

I would also recommend evohosting. I've had an account with them for about 2+ years. They run on litespeed, have great customers support available 24/7. They really know their stuff and can provide really great support on complex matters. It is a uk company and servers are based in the uk. What I really like about evohosting is you can monitor your website's server status in real time. Google "evohosting status" and you'll see what I mean. Uptime is great and any maintenance is carried out during the night (uk time). In the past I've had US hosting and the site would go down at peak times for maintenance, due to time zone differences! In summary I highly recommend them as a good all rounder, uk shared host. Keep us posted on the decision you make.

Some of the best options for hosting websites in UK are :
    1) www.fasthosts.co.uk.
    2) http://tsohost.co.uk/
    3) justhost.com

Some of them even let you add more domains without any extra cost

I'd avoid Justhost. Haven't had the best experience with them in the past.

Personally I would not go with shared hosting for wordpress as you risk it loading very slow. I can tell when I visit a wordpress blog when it is on shared hosting, you just sit and wait. I did host a wordpress site on shared one time and it was a poor experience and I had to move it. That was with 123-reg and I would not go with their shared hosting ever again (especially as they would not accept their shared hosting could not cut it for wordpress). They are good for domains though. I appreciate this is not a 100% rule, but if your site grows and you start using a lot of plugins you are going to run into problems in my opinion. Moving a wordpress site can be a hassle at best and a nightmare at worst so I would start on a VPS at the very least, and they are not too expensive. I have used easyspace.com and while I won't give them a glowing recommendation (they like to raise prices on renewal) they are better than most. If you are paying 200pa for a VPS (cheapest showing at 180 on easyspace right now) and the site loads faster it has to be worth it - equivalent value to a couple of referrals and you are not even sharing an IP which arguably has an additional seo benefit too.

I use godaddy, I haven't seen many people mention them. They have always worked well for me and they seem pretty affordable.

well, it is very difficult to say without sharing your needs. almost any hosts with a descent mysql database will be suitable. my experience is that you should be aware of the point that your wordpress installation needs a lot of RAM and most hosting companies wont give you that without a larger product plan. the same with the mysql database. some plugins like "Relevanssi" save a lot of data in the table that your database grows easily up to 50MB within a month. think that you need a provider which offers you the freedom of scalability

From experience we found them to be wholly inadequate when it came to sorting any problems that arose (and a fair few did). They are pretty good at sales but offer an appalling service when you've got a problem (at least they did with us) and they also screwed up our billing on a number of occasions and seemed to blame us for their errors, which was a tad cheeky.

Anyway, we shifted our sites to vidahost.co.uk and have since seen what a decent host can be: the support (which is very important for us as we're not very good at web technologies) has been amazing and they've always gone above and beyond what we expected.

I had a wordpress site on 123-reg and it was desperately slow to load. They give far too few resources to wordpress on that platform and I only moved because it was so bad. They are great for domains and I have VPS and dedicated hosting with them, but steer well clear of their shared hosting. Their customer service would not accept the problem existed (and got rude about it when I told them they were not allocating enough resources to cater for wordpress). Everything was solved when I shifted the site to VPS hosting.

Is 1and1 good for hosting? I don't really want to punt for a website host that I haven't heard of like crocweb or vidahost! I currently use 123's shared hosting and have had my share of problems (nothing too bad though)

You can use Digitalocean.com vps for bigger sites.
It has one click wordpress installer.
