WordPress, take clean and simple basic theme and hire css ninja to stylize for your needs.
Note: Avoid nulled themes, rarely they are full with injected js or hidden links.

Depends your website. Wordpress is really good for quickly project. but for a big project I think it's better if you develop your own CMS. You can do anything like you want, Symfony is the best for that.

But that's depends your time, ressources and how much is your budget

    Default Wordpress Child Themes

I've just noticed your post.. when you say you are customising Wordpress themes, I hope you don't mean that you are editing the theme files.. because the next time you update the theme, all your changes will be gone forever.

If you want to edit themes, create a child theme first, (there are plugins to do this) copy across only the files you need to change, and edit the copies. Then you can update the main theme without losing your changes.

My site (bashthebookies.net) uses a child theme based on a free wordpress theme. I have added a load of extra widget slots so I can add adrotate banners, eg above and below the posts. (Not on the front page, that's actually a static page using wp-show-posts..) but I digress..
