Default BetMGM Affiliates warns partners about targeted SEO promos and bonuses

According to a report from Gambling Industry News, BetMGM affiliates has sent a warning to gambling affiliates focusing on the US related to targeting and optimizing conversion-focused keywords relating to bonuses and bonus codes, claiming that "failure to comply" will result in "withholding commissions and termination."

The email sent to affiliates read as follows:

    Hello,
It has come to our attention that there has been an influx of SEO infractions which violate the terms of our agreement, specifically Section 10, Prohibited Activities.

As a reminder, you may not:

    (k) optimize for search results including any individual or combination of the terms: “bonus,” “promo code,” “coupon code,” and any similar terms and their variations (including using the aforementioned terms and variations in URL names, webpage and article titles, backlinks, and meta-descriptions);

We kindly request that if you are participating in any of the above, that you remove the aforementioned terms from your URL names, webpage and article titles, backlinks, and meta-descriptions immediately.

Failure to comply will result in withholding commissions and termination.

We appreciate your cooperation and continued promotion of BetMGM.

Please get in touch with any questions.

    Sincerely,
    Sarah Sabo

This is INSANE, particularly when they literally give affiliate promo codes to market their brand. What is more, this specific term is not accessible from their platform... the terms and conditions link lands here: https://www.betmgmpartners.com/gvcLegal.do?lang=us. All of their top affiliates go after these search terms - an interesting approach to say the least

Are they talking about branded terms (eg: betmgm bonus) or talking about bonuses in general?

If it's the latter it's bonkers.

Yeah - I was passed this today for review. My feedback was that they'd previously been given all our copy for approval, they need to clarify what they're intention is here. If it is exactly as worded, then there's no point working with BetMGM at all.

As presented this is so predatory and territorial it simply makes affiliate relationships inviable.

One or other of the big programs get's this type of over zealous idea into their heads every so often. That if affiliates didn't rank for brand search terms, they could make all the money without the cost of the affiliates. What this mindset fails to grasp is that affiliate target lots of search terms, the majority of which aren't related to their brand. When they promote the brand, all of the affiliate's traffic sees the brand, not just the visitors that come through from brand specific terms. So when the program makes themselves unattractive to work with for affiliates, the program may gain some direct search traffic they don't have to pay for because they rank top for their brand related search terms, but the lose the larger pool of referrals that was being generated by the affiliate's traffic.

Short sighted to say the least.

Interesting what will happen to it in the end. Too many complaints and dissatisfaction.
