BetonSports.com founder Gary Kaplan was arrested on Wednesday in the Dominican Republic.
Kaplan, who was indicted by a federal grand jury in the Eastern District of Missouri on June 1, 2006, faces 20 felony charges, including violating the Wire Act, racketeering, interstate transportation of gambling paraphernalia, interference with the administration of the IRS and tax evasion.
"This was a worldwide search, and thanks to the assistance of many law enforcement agencies this fugitive will soon be back in St. Louis to face the charges against him," said U.S. Attorney Catherine Hanaway.
Kaplan was sent to Puerto Rico by Dominican authorities to appear before a U.S. Magistrate Judge, who will be asked to send Kaplan to St. Louis or hold him pending a hearing to determine if Kaplan is a flight risk.
The indictment alleges that BetonSports.com took bets from undercover agents.
Indictments are still out on BetonSports.com co-owner Norman Steinberg, while David Carruthers, the former director of BetonSports, was arrested in July, 2006.
