How Many Slots is Too Many?

Slots are the most popular casino game in the Western world, closely followed by blackjack. As such, these chance-based experiences often number in their hundreds on casino websites. With so many developers engaged in building new slots, it would only be natural that eventually, the market for these simple games could become a little crowded or a little short on inspiration.

That said, slots, for all the thousands of examples out there, seem to be doing just fine.

The obvious reason why slots are so numerous on any given site is that a casino’s catalogue is designed to cater for as many people as possible. So, players who are tired of the usual suspects, slots like Starburst, Gonzo’s Quest, and Thunderstruck II, can cleanse their palate with something a little different.

As websites heavily advertise a handful of games, it can give players the impression that the alternatives aren’t worth playing - or, at least, don’t deserve the same kind of attention as Rich Wild and the Book of Dead, for instance.

While, obviously, no player is likely to try every single game that a casino or bingo site offers, multiple themes, genres, and game types can improve customer retention, as players won’t be forced to turn elsewhere for a bit of variety.

The website Buzz Bingo is predominantly focused on a single product - bingo - but has expanded to include slots, live gaming, and casino sections to appeal to a more diverse group of people. Buzz’s range of online slots currently includes popular titles such as Fluffy Favourites, The Goonies Return, and Slingo Rainbow Riches, but it also has a large selection of unique games under the Originals moniker.

The latter games are mostly slots and include branded properties, such as an official The Voice game, which is based on the British TV show of the same name. There are also a number of bingo-themed slots, including Bingo Millions.

Of course, the problem with having so many slots - regardless of what site it is - is that they can be cumbersome to maintain. Much like video games, slots do age and lose functionality over time. Most recently, the end of Adobe’s notorious Flash player meant that everything had to be re-coded in HTML5.

While this is a much more stable and secure technology, the change nevertheless caused problems with certain media, especially on websites that offered no-download games.

Oddly enough, pop culture plays its role in the type and number of games offered by casino operators. Trending TV shows such as Rick & Morty and Game of Thrones often have dedicated slots but these arguably have a much more variable shelf-life than non-branded games.

Notably, Game of Thrones’ calamitous final season almost erased the franchise from the public's collective consciousness altogether. It’s easy to see how this kind of problem can affect merchandising and related properties, too.

Overall, though, there’s arguably no such thing as too many slots, as everybody has different tastes and interests.
