The new Premier League season is well underway, and the biggest talking point so far has been the title race. It seems as if we have three even teams, Manchester City, Liverpool and Chelsea all settling down and ready to battle it out to see who can win the league.

However, just as exciting, and potentially involving more teams, right below them, we appear set for a great battle for the final top four spot. Manchester United, Arsenal, West Ham and the possibility of adding a rejuvenated Tottenham to that list means that this could go down to the wire between four teams.

The bookmakers think Manchester United have the edge in this race as the latest Premier League betting odds have them at 5/6 to finish inside the top four. If United want to maintain that position as favourites, they need to be more consistent, especially as Arsenal and West Ham have been playing well consistently.

Without a doubt, the team that has the most to lose from all of this is Manchester United. Not only are they expected to finish inside the top four, but after the summer signing of Cristiano Ronaldo they were expected to challenge for the title, especially given the money they had spent elsewhere.

West Ham have the least pressure on them, they are in the Europa League this season, and a repeat of that would be more than good enough for their supporters, who are loving the European experience.

In the middle, we have Arsenal and Tottenham, teams who should challenge for the top four, but are both rebuilding in many ways, so the recent lack of a top four finish, and if they don’t get one this season, wouldn’t be too damaging. They need to eventually get back to the top four, but probably have a couple of years at least before this is demanded from them.

If Tottenham want a team to look up to and follow then it has to be their rivals Arsenal. After three games and three defeats, many were calling for Mikel Arteta to be sacked, but since then, he’s turned it around to give them a genuine shot at the top four.

Tottenham didn’t keep the faith with Nuno Santo and replaced him with Italian manager Antonio Conte. They will be hoping for a bounce back under Conte in the short term, but in the long term they really need to look at what Arsenal have built, and in many ways, try to replicate it.

Young talent, trust in the manager and a gradual building process have all been implemented by Arsenal and they are now beginning to see the rewards of that.

It may not be enough to get them in the top four, that could well stick with Manchester United, but it certainly will be enough to take them close.
