Thanks to Leeds' winning the Championship by ten points and with world-renowned manager Marcelo Bielsa at the helm, there was understandably going to be a lot of hype surrounding Leeds United this season. After three games played, it quickly became apparent that Bielsa had no intention of simply consolidating the Whites’ place in the Premier League for next season.

This is a side that is looking to attack at all times, no matter who they are facing. The electric performances so far have even had some speculating that the Yorkshire giants could push for finish high up the table.

Leeds Will Attack Everyone in Their Way

When Leeds gave Liverpool a run for their money at Anfield on the opening day of the season, they outscored the champions in open play only to lose the game 4-3. It was clear that last season’s Championship winners weren’t going to change the tactics that have made them so successful under Bielsa.

Admittedly, the Whites looked weak in defence in the opening two fixtures, but these issues will surely be ironed out over time. After all, Leeds were the most defensively solid side in the second tier last term, conceding only 35 goals in 46 games. The most promising sign of things to come for Leeds, though, was their willingness to stick to their attacking philosophy regardless of the opponents.

Indeed, it may not be completely out of the question to suggest that Leeds could go one further than that and break into the top six. The bookies certainly think that’s a possibility, with betting odds of around 7/1 for Bielsa’s side to book a place in Europe next time out. It is clear that some of the top flight sides that Leeds will come up against this season will struggle to deal with them, and some expert pundits like Julian Laurens have claimed they could easily be the best of the rest outside of the top six.

Shrewd Additions Add to Squad Depth

Bielsa is unlikely to make too many changes to disrupt the dynamic of the juggernaut that stormed to the Championship title, and will continue with the core group of players that have spent the last two years under his wing. This includes the likes of Kalvin Phillips, Patrick Bamford, Mateusz Klich, and Liam Cooper.

There have been a few shrewd additions, though, which will add depth to the squad and spark a competition for places. Last season’s on-loan centre back Ben White has been replaced by the German international Robin Koch, and Spanish defender Diego Llorente has also been added to provide another alternative. Upfront, Spain international Rodrigo could end up being a star player for the Whites in the season ahead.

Bielsa has already defied a lot of expectations at Elland Road and managed to restore Leeds to the Premier League after a 16-year hiatus. But it feels as though the story of this marvellous manager’s journey in West Yorkshire isn’t winding down just yet. There are sure to be many more surprises yet to come, and betting on Leeds to finish in the top six is not completely out of the question.
