Parker Brothers first released Monopoly back in 1935, and within no time it was a household name across the entire world. Some 85 years, and countless editions later, the game is still just as popular. Nowadays, almost everybody owns a copy of Monopoly, and it’s even been made available to play online for real money at sites like bgo. But, why has the age-old game survived the test of time?
It takes a lot to survive the way in which the world has evolved digitally over the last two decades or so, but Monopoly has done just that. It has overcome the threat of various Nintendos, PlayStations and Xboxes, arguably by releasing digital games for the actual consoles, like Monopoly Plus, Monopoly Family Fun Pack and Monopoly for Nintendo Switch.
But as well as staying up-to-date digitally, Hasbro, who acquired the board game from Parker Brothers in the early 1990s, have helped evolve the game physically as well. Whilst the original game is still the go-to for many players, there is an electronic banking edition, which cuts out the use of the iconic paper money, and even an electronic banking version which uses a device similar to an Alexa or Google Home Hub, ensuring that the game does all it can to appeal to every generation of the family, and it never gets left on the shelf.
There are also lots of exciting variations of the classic, such as the Sore Losers Edition (come on, we all know one!), the Cheaters Edition, and Monopoly Speed – because not all of us can endure a long tedious night sat around the dinner table. Alternatively, for those who love hours of non-stop Monopoly, there’s the Longest Game Ever, which uses only one die and an extended gameboard – plus the game isn’t even over until one player owns every property!
Of course, whilst the city editions, like Monopoly Belfast, Monopoly Dublin and Monopoly Glasgow appeal to the residents of those places, as they might want to purchase their favourite concert venue, library or hotel, there is also games based on popular tv shows, video games and so on.
Over the last few years, Hasbro have released a Friends edition of the game, giving the fans of the hit 1990s sitcom the opportunity to build properties on some of the most iconic episodes. There’s also Only Fools & Horses Monopoly and a Game of Thrones edition too.
For video game fans, there’s Monopoly Fortnite and Monopoly Super Mario, and there’s even something for the sports fans, with football club-themed games, like Monopoly Tottenham Hotspur Stadium Edition, along with variants based on Chelsea, Liverpool, Manchester United and so on.
It’s undoubtedly Hasbro’s brilliant ability to target every single market that has kept Monopoly so popular over the years. They have added modern twists to the original game, brought games out for PCs and consoles and there’s an addition for everybody’s taste – whether it sports, TV and film or cities.
With over 250 million copies of the game sold worldwide since 1935, and over 1 billion having played the game, we think it’s fair to say that Monopoly isn’t going anywhere anytime soon.
